Medical assistants perform both clinical and administrative tasks under physician supervision. Typical duties include taking patients' medical histories, measuring vital signs, assisting with examinations, giving injections, collecting specimens, scheduling appointments, entering patient information and maintaining inventory. Some may focus on either clinical or administrative tasks depending on the practice.
Responsibilities Include
Interviewing patients and recording medical histories.
Measuring and recording vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, weight).
Assisting physicians during examinations and preparing patients and instruments.
Administering injections and medications as directed and permitted by law.
Scheduling patient appointments and managing the calendar.
Collecting and preparing specimens for laboratory tests and ensuring accurate documentation.
Entering patient data into electronic records and maintaining inventories of medical and office supplies. Ideal Qualifications
Highschool diploma and completion of a medicalassistant certificate or associate program; onthejob training may be acceptable.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and pharmacology.
Certification in basic life support (BLS) and ability to obtain state licensure or certification if required.
Excellent communication, compassion and attention to detail.
