SUMMARY:

The Recreation Coordinator operates Iona’s congregate dining site activities calendar (position hours are 9:30 am – 2:30 pm while the sites are typically open from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Monday through Friday). The Recreation Coordinator functions as a site host who creates a vibrant and welcoming space for program participants: DC residents age 60+. The Recreation Coordinator reports to Activities and Outreach Manager (AOM) and works in close collaboration with the team to plan, coordinate, and facilitate dining site programming. This role is responsible for implementing wellness programs and ensuring the welcome/registration table is set up with all relevant documents and handouts. They are dedicated to excellence in activities and programming.

Responsibilities:

Recreational Program Implementation:

Plan, coordinate, and lead recreational activities such as arts and crafts, group games, music sessions, exercise classes, and special events that promote engagement, wellness, and socialization among senior participants.

Adapt programs to meet varying physical and cognitive abilities, ensuring inclusive participation.

Step in to support daily site operations and maintain program continuity when the Nutrition Coordinator is unavailable, including overseeing meal service flow, managing participant sign-ins, and responding to day-to-day needs.

Collaborate with other staff and volunteers to ensure smooth program delivery and a safe, welcoming environment.

Maintain an up-to-date inventory of recreational supplies and request new materials in alignment with client preferences and program goals.

Engage regularly with participants to gather feedback and suggestions for new activities, ensuring offerings remain relevant and appealing.

Observe and assess participation to identify trends or changing interests and work with the AOM to adjust programming accordingly.

Promote participant-led initiatives to encourage ownership and enhance overall engagement and satisfaction with recreational offerings.

Accompany seniors on all Iona-sponsored trips, serving as chaperones to ensure their safety, engagement, and overall well-being throughout the outing.

Complete reassurance calls to check in on seniors who have not recently attended the site, ensured their well-being and report any identified needs or concerns to the social services coordinator.

Administrative and Operational Duties:

Complete all required paperwork, including daily attendance records.

Assist the Activity and Outreach Manager (AOM) in designing and implementing the dining site recreation schedule upon request.

Help with bus transportation arrangements for scheduled field trips as needed.

Communicate all maintenance needs and facility concerns promptly to the Ward Project Director to ensure timely resolution and a safe environment for program participants.

Dining Site Operations & Support

Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the dining and activity space daily.

Support meal service and assist the Nutrition Coordinator as needed.

Ensure the welcome/registration table is set up with all relevant documents and handouts and complete during programming hours.

Step in to maintain continuity when the Nutrition Coordinator is unavailable/ needs assistance.

Distribute handouts, menus, and calendars to participants.

Ensure all participants sign in for both meals, activities, meal reservations and more.

Coordination and Support:

Attend monthly activity planning meetings at the assigned site upon request.

Partner with the Nutrition Coordinator at the assigned site, following directives from the management team.

Assist the Nutrition Coordinator with serving food and other related tasks if the Nutrition Coordinator is absent.

REQUIREMENTS:

1+ years of related work experience

Strong relationship building and collaboration skills.

Excellent communication skills.

Experience with Zoom and Microsoft platforms (e.g., Outlook, Team, Word, and Excel)

CPR, first aid and ServSafe certificates.

Able to regularly lift, carry and maneuver 25+ lbs.

Bilingual (Spanish) is an asset but not required.
