Materials Engineer – Automotive Business

As part of SKF Automotive R&D, the Automotive Laboratory Italy organization provides technical expertise in materials technology and analysis to our Research & Development, Product Engineering, Application Engineering and Manufacturing teams.

We are seeking a Materials Engineer to join our team in the Laboratory organization in Airasca, Italy. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in steel and heat treatment, surface treatments, mechanical properties and failure analysis.

Key responsibilities

Perform metallurgical activities and analysis in accordance with internal request system and in agreement with the Metallurgy & Chemistry team planning.

Analyze test results, write technical reports and conclusions, ensure delivery of technically correct results

Actively participate in local and global improvement and customer projects related to products, efficiency and innovation, in collaboration with different departments and teams

Support the development of the local team in technical topics and training activities

Propose and develop new analysis procedures according to internal/international standards and customer specifications

Lead special assignments in core activities from Global Laboratory organization, enhancing the sharing among different laboratories/units.

Requirements

Master’s degree in Material Science, Chemistry, Materials or Mechanical Engineering.

Knowledge and experience in Metallurgy, Metallography, steel making process, Heat Treatment for Steel (e.g. induction hardening), surface treatments and forming operations.

Experience of failure analysis in the field of steel, including material properties and their performance in different applications

Knowledge of materials science, materials structure and microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties, materials processing and fracture mechanisms, metal forming processes and technologies

Experience of laboratory instruments (e.g. stereomicroscopy, light optical microscopy, microhardness tester, X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope)

Knowledge of national and international standards related to metallurgical processes (e.g DIN, ASTM).

Experience with ISO 9001/ IATF 16949 Quality Management Systems (QMS).

Good knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, and statistical data processing

Knowledge of problem solving and root cause analysis methodologies and tools

Proficiency in Italian and English, both written and spoken

Availability to travel, for short periods, is expected.

Knowledge and experience about Lubrication and Tribology, bearings manufacturing processes and applications will be considered a plus
