General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is actively seeking an ALS Paramedic who will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the care of patients with range of need from uncomplicated to complex during interfacility transport. In collaboration with the patient and family, provides theory-based professional care and coordinates care delivery with the physician and other members of the healthcare team.

Criteria:

New, full-time ALS Paramedic positions only

Cannot be employed by MSH in the same role within the past two years

Payout - $8,000 Total with an 18-month commitment

$3,000 to start (paid at successful completion of orientation/probation)

$2,500 at 12 months

$2,500 at 18 months

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Based on assessment of physical, emotional, bio-physical, and spiritual needs, provides direct patient care and evaluates outcomes. Incorporates the principles of patient-centered care.

Communicates patient's clinical information clearly and accurately in verbal and written format. Clearly and accurately documents pertinent information in the patient's medical record. Consistently demonstrates effective documentation practices and develops strategies to ensure complete documentation of patient care.

Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment of caring for patients and families. Provides basic patient comfort measures during procedures. When necessary, provides environmental support to expedite timely patient admission or transfer. Identifies and acts upon opportunities to improve the environment of care.

Provides for the emotional support of patients and families during the crisis of illness. Demonstrates patient/family advocacy.

Delivers expert paramedic care in ambulances to multiple patient types to include adult subspecialties and pediatrics.

Collaborates with on line medical control physicians to manage the patient care of complex patients in transport.

Participates in the orientation program for new staff.

As part of the program's safety management system, provides feedback and participates in program safety initiatives.

Participates in MedSTAR Transport safety program.

Administers and maintains pharmacologic agents and intravenous fluids during inter hospital transports.

Ensures safe operations during ambulance related activities in coordination with the Emergency Vehicle Operator.

Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or GED required

Successful completion of an approved EMT-Paramedic course required

Completion of an approved emergency vehicle driving course prior to release from orientation required

Experience

1-2 years experience as a National Registry Paramedic (NRP) preferred

Licenses and Certifications

NREMT - National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic required

Paramedic - Certified in the District of Columbia or ability to acquire prior to start date required

Paramedic - Licensed in Maryland or ability to acquire prior to start date required

prior to release from orientation required

CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required

Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

Health Services\ACLS required

Health Services\PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support required

ATLS - Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification within 180 Days required or

TPATC - Transport Prof Adv Trauma Crse within 180 Days required or

PHTLS - Prehospital Trauma Life Support Certification within 180 Days required or

TNCC - Trauma Nursing Core Course within 180 Days required or

ATCN - Advanced Trauma Care Nurse Certification within 180 Days required

NIH Stroke Scale - NIHSS within 90 Days required

FEMA ICS 100 Course (FEMA IS-100.c Introduction to the Incident Command System prior to release from orientation required

FEMA ICS 200 Course FEMA IS-200 ICS for Single Resource and Initial Action Incidents prior to release from orientation required

DL - Valid State Driver's License in good standing

No more than four points assigned to driver's license and must maintain a satisfactory driving record (no more than four points).

Completion of approved Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (e.g., CEVO, EVOC) prior to release from orientation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to precept.

Demonstrated high level of clinical competence.

Effective interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication.

Basic math skills.

Basic computer skills preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $28.58 - $46.94
