A Bridge Painting Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for painting and coating projects specifically focused on bridges and other structural steel infrastructure. This role requires a blend of technical expertise in painting and coatings, an understanding of bridge construction, strong analytical abilities, and effective communication skills.
Key responsibilities
Project Evaluation: Analyzing blueprints, technical documents, and project specifications to understand the scope of work and identify factors influencing costs.
Cost Estimation: Calculating the quantities of materials (paints, coatings, primers, abrasives), labor, and equipment needed for surface preparation and application. Sourcing quotes from suppliers and subcontractors as needed.
Bid Preparation & Submission: Compiling detailed bids that are competitive and profitable, considering environmental regulations, safety standards, and project timelines.
Collaboration: Working closely with project managers, field supervisors, engineers, and clients to clarify project details and ensure accurate estimates.
Risk Assessment: Identifying potential risks or challenges during the estimating phase and recommending strategies to mitigate financial or schedule-related impacts.
Cost Analysis & Benchmarking: Utilizing historical cost data and market trends to establish reliable pricing and ensure cost competitiveness.
Additional duties
Attending pre-bid meetings and conducting site visits to assess project requirements.
Staying updated on industry trends, technologies, and safety regulations related to bridge painting.
Maintaining accurate records of project costs and estimates for future reference and analysis.
Collaborating with the project team during contract development and negotiation.
Required skills and qualifications
Experience: Several years of experience in bridge or industrial painting, with a focus on coatings and surface preparation techniques, is typically required.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency with estimating software like HCSS Heavy Bid.
Strong understanding of painting processes, surface preparation techniques (including abrasive blasting), coating systems, and material requirements.
Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings and specifications.
Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices related to industrial painting and working at heights.
Potential Certifications
Certifications such as the AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance, formerly NACE or SSPC) Coating Inspector Level 1 or Bridge Coating Inspector Level 1 can be highly beneficial, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
OSHA certification or other relevant safety training is a plus.
