What you’ll do:

The Bureau of Criminal Identification, known as BCI, is the state’s official crime lab serving the criminal justice community and protecting Ohio families. BCI also provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies upon request. With offices throughout the state, BCI stands ready to respond 24/7 to local law enforcement agencies’ needs at no cost to the requesting agency.

Staff at BCI work every day to provide the highest level of service. This includes special agents who are on call 24/7 to offer investigative assistance at crime scenes, knowledgeable scientists and forensic specialists using cutting-edge technology to process evidence to bring criminals to justice, and criminal intelligence analysts and identification specialists who help local law enforcement solve cases. Experienced special agents, forensic scientists, and other law enforcement experts’ staff BCI’s three main divisions: 1) Identifications 2) Investigations and 3) Laboratory.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office is currently seeking a public minded individual for a Forensic Scientist vacancy in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section within the Databasing unit of the London Laboratory. This position will report to the lab with some work from home available.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

- Under administrative supervision, conducts genetic tests (to include mitochondrial DNA analysis) on items of evidence from unidentified human remains and a reference standard (i.e., blood, semen, bones, and other body fluids & tissues) and conducts tests on offender samples for entry into the database. The process includes sampling the item, DNA extraction, quantification, amplification, analysis using capillary electrophoresis and/or massively parallel sequencing.

-Analyze and interpret results using lab manuals.

- Makes conclusions and formulates opinions based on examinations performed.

-Perform statistical analyses.

- Prepares accurate reports for use by law enforcement officials and courts.

- Assists with the CODIS database.

- Confers with law enforcement officials (e.g., police, deputies, investigators, courts) regarding examinations performed and conclusions reached.

- Testifies in court concerning evidence examined and analyses performed.

- Contributes to validation reports.

- Advises other employees and law enforcement agencies on topics of analysis, court testimony, interpretation of results and reports, etc.

- Assists or directs investigators with evidence collection.

- Gives lectures to community groups.

- Keeps current with improved or new methods: researches and interprets literature on analytical methods.

- Develops new methods and maintains professional liaisons with colleagues in DNA testing and research.

- Performs related miscellaneous lab duties.

- Performs photographic tasks.

- Maintains equipment and work area.

- Prepares reagents and other processing chemicals.

- Any other related duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree or an advanced degree in a chemical, physical, biology, or forensic science. The bachelor's degree & course content must meet the academic requirements of the laboratory's accrediting body.

NOTE: A TRANSCRIPT MUST BE INCLUDED WHEN APPLYING FOR THIS POSITION.

Unusual working conditions include: Can be exposed to caustic chemicals, explosives, odors, firearms, drugs, decomposing tissue & physiological fluids & contagious diseases. May require overnight travel.
