Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.

The Department of Integrated Systems Engineering ( and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering ( at The Ohio State University invite applications for a joint Tenure Track Associate Professor appointment in the area of Advanced Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence. The research area must complement the current research portfolios. This position will start as early as Fall 2026.

Position Overview

Research and Development Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to obtain funding and perform research related to advanced manufacturing, materials and forming processes, damage and failure analysis, process simulation, dynamic behavior of materials, and mathematical modeling of manufacturing processes. Deep understanding in process design, understanding of quality and standards, and digital twinning is beneficial. The development and application of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to optimize/automate manufacturing processes is a crucial part of this position’s responsibilities. Experience in commercial manufacturing in particular automotive related research is highly desirable. The successful candidate is expected to hold a joint appointment in the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department, and work closely with the director of the HAMMER (Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution) Engineering Research Center.

It is expected that the individual will publish scholarly papers in peer-reviewed journals, and will provide significant national/international service. A Ph.D. in engineering is required.

Teaching Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities in ISE, and MSE to bring state of the art manufacturing insights to the classroom. Specifically, ISE 4510 (Manufacturing Engineering) a new course emphasizing quantitative analysis of manufacturing processes, discusses manufacturing support systems, evaluates interplay between materials and manufacturing, and discusses future manufacturing like automation and data-driven controls. ISE 4500 (Manufacturing Process Engineering) provides a quantitative understanding of contemporary manufacturing processes; exposure to laboratory exercises and computer simulations in major manufacturing processes; design for manufacturing and assembly. The candidate would be expected to develop an educational program combining the application of AI to improve and control manufacturing processes in automotive related industries. This may also have a distance or outreach component with industrial engagement and credentialing.

Demonstrate the national and international recognition of his or her research contributions by publications in peer reviewed journal and conferences, participation in editorial boards, etc.

Demonstrate ability to secure funding to support research program

Demonstrate ability to interact with other researchers and university leaders.

Support the department functions through departmental, college and university service.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required:

Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering, materials science engineering, or related areas.

Expertise in both manufacturing methods and artificial intelligence

Demonstrated record in securing competitive peer-reviewed research funding

Strong record of publications in peer reviewed conference and Journals

Service on editorial boards, conference committees, and policy-making panels and boards

Experience teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels or demonstrated potential to be able to achieve excellent teaching.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, with a focus on working constructively, decisively, and collegially with both external and internal colleagues and interdisciplinary teams.

The candidate should possess advanced mentoring skills.

A history of engaging in industrial partnerships and external fundraising

Expertise in automotive related manufacturing research.

The final offer for this position will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Salary and start-up packages are negotiated by the department chair and may vary depending on individual circumstances.

Describe previous mentoring training and/or experience

State mentoring skills you consider fundamental, including those necessary to effectively mentor students from all cultural backgrounds.
