Controller Construction & Engineering

Locations: Charlotte, NC Columbus, OH Indianapolis, IN Chicago, IL Woodridge, IL

Salary: $120,000 $155,000 annually

About the Role:

A growing consulting and construction engineering firm is seeking an experienced Controller to join its accounting team. This position is ideal for a finance professional with a strong background in multi-company corporate structures, construction accounting, and team leadership. The Controller will play a critical role in directing the firms accounting practices and procedures, maintaining accurate fiscal records, and providing structural controls to protect company assets.

The Controller will oversee a portion of the accounting team, working closely with the CFO to manage payroll, accounts payable/receivable, project accounting (client invoicing), and financial reporting. They will also assist with the monthly financial close, annual budgeting, business planning, and financial analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervise a segment of the accounting team, providing guidance and mentorship.

Support payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and project accounting functions.

Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and ensure timely financial close.

Assist with corporate financial matters, including shareholder reporting, ESOP distributions, external audits, and compliance filings.

Support treasury functions and manage day-to-day bank transactions.

Assist with capital purchases, insurance applications, and execution of finance agreements.

Participate in accounting process improvement initiatives, including dashboards, reporting, and system enhancements.

Assist with financial modeling, due diligence, and integration activities for acquisitions.

Qualifications & Skills:

Strong experience managing accounting teams.

Expertise in financial reporting for multi-company corporate structures and intercompany transactions.

Construction accounting experience is a plus.

Strong analytical skills and advanced Excel proficiency.

Ability to understand and guide accounting systems for effective team operations.

Excellent problem-solving and reporting skills, with a client service orientation.

Experience with audits is a plus.

Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and see projects through to completion.
