Epic Cogito Systems Administrator

T he Epic Cogito Systems Administrator is responsible for the design, configuration, administration, performance tuning, and support of Epic’s Cogito suite, including Clarity, Caboodle databases, ETL processes, and business intelligence environments. This role ensures the availability, accuracy, performance, and security of Epic’s reporting infrastructure to support enterprise data analytics, regulatory reporting, and operational insights. This role reports to the Director of Information Systems Support Services.

Essential Job Duties:

+ Install, configure, monitor, and maintain Epic Cogito components, including Clarity, Caboodle, SlicerDicer, and Reporting Workbench.

+ Collaborate with database administrators (DBAs) to optimize data loads (ETL) and ensure the performance of large-scale reporting databases.

+ Work closely with Cogito analysts, EMR application teams, and IT infrastructure teams to ensure seamless data flow from operational systems to reporting tools.

Clarity and Caboodle Database Administration

+ Maintain and monitor Epic Clarity (operational data store) and Caboodle (data warehouse) databases, including indexing, performance tuning, backup/restore, and disaster recovery.

+ Apply Epic updates (DLRs, INIs) and patches in accordance with release cycles and testing protocols.

+ Work with Epic application teams to optimize query performance and support large-scale reporting needs.

+ Ensure database environments meet security and compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA, HITRUST)

ETL Administration (Clarity and Caboodle):

+ Manage and monitor ETL jobs between Epic production systems, Clarity, and Caboodle using Epic-supplied ETL tools (Cognos Data Manager, SSIS, or Epic-native schedulers).

+ Troubleshoot ETL failures and latency issues and coordinate with Epic technical support when needed.

+ Build and schedule custom ETL processes to support advanced analytics and third-party integrations.

+ Document ETL workflows, schedules, and dependencies to maintain transparency and support.

Business Intelligence Administration

+ Administer BI tools such as SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik to support dashboards and self-service analytics.

+ Manage access control, data source connections, scheduled reports, and dashboard deployments.

+ Work with BI Developers and data analysts to ensure timely and accurate delivery of KPIs and metrics.

+ Monitor system health and optimize query execution and visualization performance.

+ May be required to work long hours during critical problems

+ On-call rotation required.

+ Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, or related field (or equivalent experience).

+ 3+ years of hands-on experience with Epic Clarity and/or Caboodle administration.

+ Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle databases (including backup, tuning, and replication).

+ Proficiency in managing Epic Clarity ETL or Caboodle ETL (CDM, SSIS, or custom scripting).

+ Familiarity with BI tools like SSRS, Power BI, or Tableau.

+ Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.

+ Epic certifications in Cogito, Clarity, and/or Caboodle (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).

+ Knowledge of ETL automation, scheduling, and monitoring tools.

+ Experience supporting data governance, metadata management, and regulatory reporting.
