Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, museum studies, or a related field; prior experience as a living history interpreter or educator in a museum or historic site; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Teaching experience in the field of history, anthropology, or elementary education preferred; knowledge of 17th-21st century American material culture, including tools and weaponsand the proven ability to safely demonstrate period tools and weapons of various eras; period foods; and period clothing etc. Ability to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions. Ability to perform physical labor and lift up to 50 pounds. Must be comfortable wearing historically accurate reproduction clothing from the established guidelines of the department supervisor. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.
Duties
Under the direction of the Historical Interpretation Supervisor, the living history interpreter will research, train, and demonstrate Virginia history of a variety of eras. The interpreter will be able to present and demonstrate at several historical sites: Henricus Historical Park, Midlothian Mines, Point of Rocks Civil War Hospital, Historic Castlewood, Historic Eppington, etc. The interpreter must be able to use both first-and-third person interpretive techniques as required. Associated duties may include starting and maintaining fires, splitting and stacking firewood, weeding and gardening, cooking period foods, animal care including chickens, goats, pigs, etc., The interpreter will work directly with visitors of all ages, group tours, volunteers, and other interpreters. Works as needed on weekends for special events and programs. Performs other work as required.
