Position Summary:
The Paramedic is a highly skilled and compassionate professional responsible for providing advanced life support (ALS) and emergency medical care to patients in pre-hospital settings. Under the direction of a physician and following established medical protocols, the Paramedic assesses patient conditions, administers medications, and performs advanced medical procedures. This role is crucial for ensuring the well-being of patients during transport and in emergency situations. The Paramedic works as part of a team, often with an EMT, to deliver the highest standard of patient care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Assessment:
Responds to emergency calls and performs rapid, thorough patient assessments.
Administers advanced life support, including medication administration, IV therapy, and advanced airway management.
Operates and maintains specialized medical equipment, such as defibrillators, ventilators, and monitors.
Documents all patient care, observations, and interventions accurately and completely in patient care reports (PCRs).
Operational Duties:
Operates an emergency vehicle safely and efficiently, often under stressful conditions.
Ensures the ambulance and medical equipment are clean, stocked, and in good working order before, during, and after shifts.
Communicates effectively with dispatch, hospital staff, and other emergency services personnel.
Adheres to all state and local EMS regulations and company policies.
Teamwork and Professionalism:
Works collaboratively with EMTs and other first responders to provide seamless patient care.
Provides guidance and mentorship to less-experienced team members.
Maintains a high level of professionalism, empathy, and composure in all interactions.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Expertise in advanced emergency medical procedures and patient assessment.
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skillsto make rapid, accurate decisions in high-stress situations.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective patient interaction and documentation.
Ability to work effectively as a team memberand follow chain of command.
In-depth knowledge of EMS protocols, HIPAA regulations, and patient confidentiality.
Proficiency in operating an emergency vehicle and all related medical equipment.
Emotional resilience and a calm demeanorunder pressure.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
Must possess a valid Paramedic certificationfrom a recognized and accredited program.
Current state Paramedic licenseis mandatory.
Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificationsare required.
Previous experience in an ambulance service or similar emergency medical setting is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able tolift, carry, and move patientsweighing up to 150 lbs, often with assistance.
The job requiresfrequent kneeling, bending, and stoopingto provide care.
Ability to work in confined spaces and various weather conditions.
Must have the physical stamina to work long shifts.
