Job Summary

Job Title - Lead Nurse (RN)

Reports to: Superintendent or Superintendent Designee

FLSA status: Exempt

Position Overview: The Lead School Nurse coordinates and oversees health services across the district to ensure compliance with Alabama Board of Nursing regulations and the Alabama School Health Act. This position provides leadership to all school nurses, collaborates with

administrators and supports the health and safety needs of students.

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school.

Preferred: Master's in Nursing (MSN). License & Certifications:

Active, unrestricted Alabama RN license.

CPR/BLS certification (e.g., AHA or Red Cross). Experience:

Minimum of 5 years as a nurse (school, hospital, or community health), with leadership or

supervisory experience preferred. Other Requirements:

Valid Alabama driver's license and reliable transportation Essential Duties:

Responsible for carrying out the Marengo County School District's health program in all schools

Schedules and conducts screening and assessments to detect problems in vision, hearing, and scoliosis

Documents and refers students with deficiencies in accordance with Departmental Regulations

Establishes and maintains contact with community agencies and clinics

Responsible for learning, providing, and staying familiar with the policies and procedures for the health care of students

Investigates referrals regarding individual health problems and refers to the appropriate agency for treatment; follows up and submits any required reports

Works with principal and teachers to plan and carry out first aid and safety education programs

Trains and works with volunteers assisting in the MCS Health Program.

Prepares and makes presentations regarding the School Nursing Program to school and community organizations such as PTA/PTO, Clubs, Civic Organizations, etc.

Participates in school in-service training programs as requested

Serve as the district's lead health professional and provide supervision, guidance, and evaluation for all school nurses.

Collaborate with principals and district administrators on health-related issues affecting students and staff.

Provide leadership for school nurses, including mentoring, professional development, and ongoing support.

Fill in as needed at school sites to provide direct nursing services when other nursing staff are absent or unavailable and administer medication to students

Coordinate districtwide health services, ensuring adherence to state laws, Board policies, and professional standards of practice.

Develop, review, and implement health policies and procedures, including emergency health protocols.

Maintain communication with parents, physicians, and community agencies regarding student health needs.

Monitor compliance with immunization, communicable disease, and health screening requirements.

Address personnel concerns or issues related to health services and communicate them to the Superintendent or designated administrator.

Manage and maintain health records, documentation, and reports as required by state law.

Ensure confidentiality of sensitive student health information. Participate in administrative meetings and serve on committees as requested.

Establish a positive relationship with parents, co-workers, volunteers, and other visitors

Performs other related duties as assigned Physical Requirements:

Medium: Physical demands include sitting, standing, walking, occasional lifting (up to ~50 lbs.), and exposure to potential health risks.

Terms: Position typically follows a 9.5-month contract (192 days), the usual Monday-Friday schedule.

Salary/Benefits: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the Marengo County Board of Education's approved salary schedule.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
