The EVS Manager oversees plans, organizes, manages and evaluates operations for a designated area(s) on a 24-hour basis as needed; enhances and improves the operations of the unit to support the Medical Center’s mission, vision and values; evaluates and identifies achievements and problems in meeting goals; manages, guides, coaches, and evaluates the work performance of environmental services staff in a designated area; promotes and ensures ongoing collaboration with other patient care departments and areas that relate directly or indirectly to patient care operations and services; administers and manages unit budget plans; identifies, plans and initiates cost saving initiatives; identifies opportunities for improvement in patient care and organizational processes; assumes leadership in identifying and correcting factors contributing to problematic outcomes

Duties and Responsibilities

75% of the time:

Administrative & Management

Manages and oversees the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the direct care activities for assigned staff.

Demonstrates effective communication, problem solving, negotiating, and conflict resolution skills; promotes inter-professional collaboration and teamwork.

Demonstrates a management style based on forming positive relationships, providing advocacy and vision, emotional intelligence, effective communication, staff empowerment and shared decision making.

Leads and promotes a healthy work environment /culture through quality leadership, access to resources (staff and supplies), shared decision making, ongoing professional development opportunities, teamwork, and collaboration.

Interviews, selects, hires, and mentors’ staff; oversees, leads guides, coaches, and evaluates the work performance of EVS staff in a designated area in collaboration with the assistant director.

Promotes and ensures ongoing collaboration with other patient care departments and areas that relate directly or indirectly to patient care operations and are have direct impacts with EVS cleaning solutions.

Conducts monthly communication forums such as staff meetings and daily staff huddles. Demonstrates effective problem solving, negotiating, and conflict resolution skills. Promotes Diversity, cultural competence, and generational diversity.

Provides comprehensive oversight of new hires throughout the onboarding and training processes

Provides the initial department assessment, evaluating the new hire’s willingness and ability to learn and demonstrate competencies to perform the assigned tasks.

Collaborates with Human Resources and department managers to ensure successful organizational and departmental orientation as well as technical training of assigned job responsibilities consistent with best practice.

Proactively addresses any improvement opportunities or concerns. Leads or participates in performance improvement projects and process improvement efforts.

Researches, coordinates and implements core training programs and systems (cleaning and disinfection practices, protocols, auditing tools, competencies, job aides, in-services, skills labs, etc.). Develops and utilizes appropriate evaluation systems to measure effectiveness of educational activities and uses feedback to adjust programs accordingly.

Collaboratively selects training materials with department director and/or manager.

Maintains and organizes training materials and associated validation of employee competency training to meet accreditation requirements.

Establishes EVS annual continuing education calendar.

Designs a range of learning interventions or processes for Quality Assurance and improvements

Provides measurements for uniforms and maintains lockers

Interviewing an oversight of hiring of front line EVS staff and managers.

Oversees supply tech/supply room and equipment technician/equipment area

Establishes self as a Subject Matter Expert in environmental services, regulatory compliance, and training

Effectively employs appropriate use of computers and mobile devices for daily job performance activities using applicable hardware or software, attaching files, composing cohesive and appropriate electronic messages and appropriately using internet browsers or sites

Employs a customer centered approach when addressing the needs of patients, visitors, guests, team members and other health care workers

Leads management of required annual computer-based learning (CBLS) and all needed health screening and vaccination deadlines

Assures a culture of accountability and “just culture” is maintained throughout the department.

Financial & Quality

Manages departmental budgets (e.g., capital, projects, supplies, operations).

Ensures regulated medical waste is handled, packaged, stored, and disposed of in accordance with federal and state regulations, and appropriate documentation is maintained.

Manages the necessary and required resources for the environmental services department and provides recommendations for staffing levels, products, and equipment.

Manages all quality improvement initiatives regarding training, auditing, inspecting, rounding, and making recommendations as needed.

Collaborates with the EVS leadership to establish dashboard metrics to track operations and improvement initiatives.

Promotes a culture of safety, hand hygiene, patient experience, as well as employee engagement and retention.

Establishes self as the subject matter expert (SME) within the environmental services department and unit of coverage, regulatory compliance, and training.
