Medical Records Director
Responsibilities:
Directs and manages the overall activities of the HIM department and all hospital system functions related to patient records management.
Maintains positive interpersonal relationships with all levels of hospital system management and staff.
Establishes departmental goals and objectives, maintains and manages productivity and quality standards, and ensures overall job competencies to achieve departmental goals.
Participates in the LEM System goals setting and maintenance.
Supervises and coordinates department activities to include proper records prepping, scanning, storage, and disposal, as well as records completion, medical coding and audits, information release and Quality Improvement.
Establishes and controls the comprehensive department budget; completes all needed financial analyses and forecasts used in management and future planning.
Provides leadership in Quality Improvement within the HIM Department and manages processes for patient data requirements for the hospital system used in quality reporting.
Functions as the hospital system Security Officer and is responsible for the Security of Health Information Data.
-Possesses advanced knowledge of revenue cycle operations, hospital and professional coding, and electronic health records with keen ability to multi-task.
Demonstrates ability to independently organize, plan, and manage personnel and functions in a Health Information Management Department and provide technical assistance in all phases of the Department.
Demonstrates the ability to relate well with hospital staff as well as the medical staff.
Must be able to keep all work highly confidential, participate in the HIPAA meetings and education, and hold the Security Officer position for protected health information.
Must possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written are required.
The Director is experienced in the management of both the physical and logical information security systems.
Must possess a high degree of integrity and trust along with the ability to work independently.
Must also possess excellent documentation skills and the ability to weigh business risks and enforce appropriate information security measures.
This position requires maintaining an in-depth knowledge of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rule and other government technology laws, as applicable.
Demonstrates knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, specifically HIPAA, CMS, JCAHO- as related to the HIM functions.
Must be proficient in MS Office products - Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
Education/Experience:
Registered Health Information Administrator, RHIA, preferred
Graduate of an approved Health Information Management Program, required
Business Degree in Health Information Management or Health-related field required
Certified Coding Specialist, CCS, Preferred
Certified Tumor Registrar, CTR, Helpful
Certified Professional Health Quality, Helpful
Seven years' experience in a HIM environment with five years of leadership/management experience in a Health Information Management Department in an accredited hospital or other similar healthcare setting.
