Job Summary

The Network Security Engineer is responsible for the overall security architecture of the network (LAN/WAN/WLAN). This position must stay current with cybersecurity trends and best practices and look for and mitigate system vulnerabilities.

This position is the primary administrator of the campus VPN appliances and firewalls. This position will also assist in supporting the campus LAN, WAN, and Datacenter.

Through our Technology Support Center and our highly trained staff, Technology Solutions looks to improve the campus experience for all students, faculty, staff, and the rest of the campus community.

Technology Infrastructure and Research Computing (TIRC) manages the physical server, virtualization, and storage infrastructure for the University along with offering communication and collaboration support in areas such as email, shared storage, and SharePoint. Additionally, TIRC provides networking infrastructure and delivers audio and video communication capabilities to campus.

- This position is eligible for hybrid work (up to two remote days per week). Eligibility is based upon employee performance, appropriate remote working environment, and business needs.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$75,000 - $85,000 annual

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Telecommunications Management, Cybersecurity, or related field

Work experience that includes all of the following:

a. Seven (7) years:

- working with an enterprise network and/or in an education environment

- relating to network infrastructure/architecture, remote access systems, internet connectivity, or server administration

- utilizing an in-depth knowledge of wired and wireless network connectivity and routing protocols, both LAN and WAN

- utilizing a comprehensive understanding of wired and wireless security issues

- utilizing a comprehensive knowledge of cabling systems (STP, UDP, and fiber) network topologies (TCP/IP and Ethernet), and corresponding hardware and software components (switches, routers, transceivers, access points, etc.)

- working with network drawings, cable plant drawings, and technical manuals and materials

- working with Cisco IOS, and ASA technologies

- working with VPN and firewall technologies, developing ACLs, and troubleshooting

b. Two (2) years:

- designing networks, managing enterprise IP space (NAT and PAT IP architecture), performing research in support of planning and network design criteria, and making recommendations to first level supervisor

- interpreting network performance metrics and reports to help analyze and monitor network resource consumption

- utilizing knowledge of network monitoring and alerting systems, as well as working knowledge of the SNMP protocol

- utilizing a good understanding of PCI, HIPPA, and CJIS compliance regulations

The following skills and abilities:

a. Proficient spreadsheet and word processing skills

b. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

c. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

d. Strong problem solving and analytic skills

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of NIST cybersecurity framework.

SANs certification, and other network engineer related certifications such as CCNA or CCNP.

Working knowledge of CIS controls.

Work Hours

Core Hours: Generally normal business hours (8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday); weekend or after-hours work may be required to support change management or disaster recovery

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.

Distinguish color codes and wires.

Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal and visual inspection involving small objects.
