Position Overview
The Department of Entomology is seeking a temporary Research Technician to support projects sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the laboratory of Dr. Jamie Strange. This role involves both field and laboratory work focused on bumble bee research, including specimen collection, curation, pathogen screening, and data analysis.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with field collection of bumble bee specimens (approx. 10% of duties), which may include limited overnight travel out of state
Curate and process bee specimens in the laboratory
Conduct dissections and microscopic inspections for pathogens and parasites
Record and manage field and laboratory data in shared digital folders, ensuring accuracy and data security
Analyze research data and contribute to protocol development for scientific publications
Collaborate with a team of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars, completing duties as assigned
Minimum Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED
1–2 years of relevant experience handling and processing bee specimens in field and laboratory settings
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Entomology or a related Natural Science field
Experience with insect dissection and microscopy
Familiarity with data management and scientific writing
