Work setting Long term care facility Responsibilities Tasks Provide supportive, effective, optimistic leadership to all nutritional care staff.

Provide strong, consistent leadership to ensure the maintenance of a cohesive and cooperative management team.

Ensure that effective management systems (including reporting and internal control) within the nutritional care department are maintained to ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, The Fixing Long Term Care Act and corresponding regulations, OMNI standards, policies and procedures.

Ensure the appropriate delegation of duties, responsibilities and accountability to all nutritional care staff.

Ensure appropriate management presence and support are available in the home.

Demonstrate commitment to the home and residents by recognizing that hours and days of work may be altered from time to time, based on the needs of the home.

Ensure the implementation and management of effective information and communication systems within the nutritional care department and with all other departments.

Direct and oversee the appropriate utilization of all resources to ensure appropriate allocation to support required care and services.

Develop proposals for the annual operating budget.

Ensure the availability of appropriate supplies and equipment required for all scheduled programs at all times.

Ensure that the OMNI tools for performance management are consistently and effectively utilized within the nutritional care department.

Participate in the development and maintenance of appropriate and current policies and procedures, which reflect the philosophy, goals and objectives of the organization.

Recruit, hire, train, promote, monitor and manage nutritional care personnel; evaluate employee performance in accordance with established policy; assist in the training of personnel in other departments.

Foster a climate of positive and respectful labour relations.

Make recommendations for the provision of effective and responsive education programs.

Ensure that legislated standards for mandatory education programs in nutritional care are met.

Demonstrate the value of continuing education with an expectation that staff attend a minimum of 50% of in house programs.

Ensure the maintenance of a safe environment for residents, staff and visitors.

Establish and enforce the expectation that hazardous conditions and actions are promptly reported and corrected.

Apply the principles and standards of Safety First, using consistency in the application of policies and procedures which have been developed to provide a safe work environment for all staff.

Work collaboratively with other disciplines to coordinate an efficient multidisciplinary system of admission, transfer and discharge which effectively meets the needs of residents, family members, staff and the community.

Participate in the admission interview to introduce the resident to the home and assess his/her needs and preferences including his/her physical, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual needs and interests.

Facilitate the bi-annual menu implementation process.

Ensure menus are implemented within established timelines and according to OMNI policies and procedures and applicable legislation.

Ensure resident preferences and requests are recognized and accommodated and documented in keeping with OMNI policy.

Ensure the provision and maintenance of standardized recipes and food production sheets that correspond appropriately with the OMNI menu and forecasted production requirements.

Ensure regular presence in all dining areas in the home during each meal service period.

Ensure services provided from external sources meet the required standards of safety and quality and effectively meet the needs of the residents.

Ensure that all personnel adhere to policies and procedures for safe food handling and infection control.

Ensure all nutritional care staff have the regular opportunity to attain and maintain safe food handler training.

Ensure that documentation in the clinical record is accurate, current and complete.

Ensure that MDS assessments and RAPs are an accurate reflection of the residents and the care that they are provided in the home.

Communicate with the home’s Registered Dietitian as required to ensure appropriate and necessary nutritional care is provided to each resident.

Implement nutritional interventions as directed by the Registered Dietitian.

Provide input into service and product evaluations to ensure that they meet the required standards of safety and quality and effectively meet the needs of the residents.

Utilize quality improvement tools in order to ensure effective evaluation and continuous improvement of all aspects of care and services.

Utilize Risk Management tools as directed to effectively identify and support the management of actual and potential risks.

Work collaboratively with the Administrator to manage WSIB claims including implementation of the organization’s early and safe return to work program.

Summarize the bi-weekly hours of work in the nutritional care department for the office manager to process payroll.

Oversee and participate in an effective team/committee structure in the nutritional care department.

Attend team meetings in accordance with established terms of reference.

Cooperate in the development of supportive relationships with representatives of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Long Term Care, community partners, LHINs, Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, CCAC and other external agencies and organizations.

Represent support and enthusiasm for each of the OMNI core programs.

Participate in opportunities for professional development.

Assist with the orientation of new employees as assigned.

Perform other duties as required.
