About The Role

Job Title: Senior Engineer, Electromagnetics

Location: Guilford, CT, USA

The Senior Engineer, RF / Electromagnetics designs, tests, characterizes, and optimizes RF coils and associated analog electronics for the low MHz frequency domain. Secondary to this, they may contribute significantly to the electromagnetic subsystem of the ultra low field MRI system, including B0 magnet and gradient system. They develop manufacturing and design verification processes to ensure manufactured products meet design goals with efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The senior engineer is expected to be able to conduct research and development activities independently when needed, collaborate cross-functionally, and provide guidance to junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct research and development efforts related to radiofrequency coils, sensors, preamplifiers, and analog circuitry for portable MRI applications.

Simulate, test, and optimize coil and RF electronics designs.

Collaborate cross-functionally with systems engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and MR scientists, product management and senior leadership to ensure seamless integration of RF and electromagnetic subsystems.

Develop and validate novel hardware-based EM-noise reduction methods for ultra-low-field MRI.

Partner with vendors and manufacturing teams to guide electromagnetic system prototyping, assembly, production scale-up and QA processes.

Document designs, models, and tools in accordance with the company’s quality system requirements.

Additional Responsibilities:

Contribute to research and development efforts related to low-field magnet, gradient coil, and shield design for portable MRI applications.

Develop and validate novel magnet characterization methods, including field mapping, eddy-current mapping and thermal stability assessments.

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities:

Strong background in the theory of electromagnetism.

Working knowledge of analog circuit design and prototyping.

Experience with radiofrequency circuits and phased array design.

Strong understanding of RF principles including coil design, signal transmission, and pre-amplifiers.

Experience of physics-based modeling with appropriate mathematical tools.

Ability to critically assess research papers and patents on topics relating to MRI hardware, magnetostatics, and RF engineering.

Experience with data acquisition and automation.

Familiarity with lab equipment like oscilloscope/VNA.

Excellent communication and documentation skills for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge transfer.

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering physics, or electrical engineering and 5 years’ related work experience; or

Equivalent combination or education and experience (e.g., Master’s degree with 3 years’ experience or a PhD degree in a relevant field).

Preferred Qualifications:

Research or work experience in the following areas: MRI, experimental atomic physics, experimental quantum computing, plasma physics, radio astronomy, or accelerator science.

Experience with electromagnetics simulation tools, such as COMSOL, ANSYS Maxwell, CST/Opera, etc.

Ability to design mechanical parts, including 3D CAD modeling and creating engineering drawings for fabrication.

Experience of mechanical prototyping such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and use of lathe and milling machines.

Working knowledge of MRI system architecture.

Programming with Python

Physical Demands:

This is an on-site role based out of Hyperfine’s office in Guilford, CT.

Ability to work in a laboratory and prototype environment, including safe handling of magnets and power electronics. Ability to speak and write in English

Available nights, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

Ability to occasionally lift up to 40lbs.

Ability to use basic electrical & mechanical tools (screwdriver, wrenches, crimping tools, oscilloscope, etc).

Travel up to 5% of time for business needs (e.g., vendor and contract manufacturer site visits).
