Job Summary:

The Tool Room Technician at Reader Precision Solutions will serve as a key troubleshooting and technical resource in our high-tech machine shop, specializing in repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment, creating custom tooling and fixturing, and supporting production processes. This role will provide hands-on expertise in diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues, developing specialized solutions to improve operations, assisting with cam cutting for Swiss Tornos and Escomatic machines, and ensuring production teams have the technical support needed to maximize uptime and quality. A strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and a proactive approach to process improvement are essential in this role.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Troubleshooting & Mechanical Repairs

Diagnose and repair mechanical equipment issues across production, minimizing downtime and ensuring smooth operations.

Work with production teams to identify root causes of equipment failures and implement effective corrective actions.

Perform preventative maintenance and recommend mechanical improvements to extend equipment life.

Custom Tooling & Fixturing Development

Design and fabricate custom tooling, fixtures, and workholding solutions to optimize production processes.

Modify and adapt existing tooling to improve efficiency, accuracy, and ease of operation.

Collaborate with engineering and production teams to ensure tooling solutions meet job & client specific requirements.

Cam Cutting & Process Support

Assist with cutting, modifying, and maintaining cams for Swiss Tornos and Escomatic machines based on production needs.

Ensure cams and tooling are precision-made to meet specifications and enhance process performance.

Support the setup and optimization of mechanical processes for maximum productivity and quality.

Blueprint & Technical Drawing Interpretation

Read, interpret, and apply information from blueprints and technical drawings for tooling and repair tasks.

Verify dimensions, tolerances, and other specifications to meet strict production standards.

Provide guidance to operators on blueprint interpretation and process adjustments.

Tool Room Equipment Operation & Maintenance

Operate mills, lathes, grinders, and other tool room machinery to produce, modify, and maintain tooling and fixtures.

Maintain and calibrate precision measuring instruments to ensure tooling accuracy.

Troubleshoot and repair tool room machinery as needed to maintain operational readiness.

Inventory & Documentation

Keep an organized inventory of tooling, spare parts, and materials to support quick turnaround on repairs.

Document all repairs, modifications, and tooling changes for traceability and process improvement.

Collaborate with Purchasing department to order parts, materials, and tooling to meet production requirements.

Skills & Qualifications:

3-5 years of experience as a Tool Room Technician or similar role in a precision machining or manufacturing environment, with specific expertise in Swiss Tornos, Escomatics, or CNC lathes highly desired.

Previous experience in cam cutting, tooling design, and setup preferred.

Proficiency with mills, lathes, grinders, and other standard tool room machinery.

Strong skills in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, and engineering documents.

An understanding of machine mechanics, including an ability to troubleshoot and optimize tooling performance.

High degree of precision in all aspects of tooling work, with a commitment to quality and accuracy.

Ability to think critically and implement effective solutions to technical challenges in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work well with production, engineering, and quality team as well as independently.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time, benefits eligible & non-exempt position.

Scheduled work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:30AM to 3:00PM (40 hours/week) with the flexibility to work overtime as needed to meet production demands.

The Tool Room Technician will be exposed to machine oils, and various metalworking equipment. Proper safety precautions are required.
