About Diffraqtion
At Diffraqtion, we are revolutionising AI imaging using our proprietary breakthrough quantum technology. We are a DARPA, NASA, and VC-backed startup founded by MIT & Harvard scientists and veterans in AI, Optics, and Quantum Sensing. Inspired by the eye, we are building a Visual Processing and Sensing Unit which replaces a conventional camera and processor. Calculating at the speed of light, we achieve orders of magnitude higher resolution, processing speed and energy efficiency for cameras. Using this camera, we will make Earth and Space Imaging satellites affordable and ubiquitous.
As our first Algorithms hire, we are seeking a highly skilled Scientist specializing in quantum optics and information theory. This role is ideal if you enjoy applying your skills to build a first-of-a-kind innovative hardware device that will be shot into Low Earth Orbit. You will calculate the fundamental quantum limits of various imaging and sensing scenarios, build models, perform simulations, and develop algorithms. You will work closely with the optical hardware scientists/engineers bringing optical concepts from initial design to fully functional prototypes.
The ideal candidate has a broad and strong background in quantum optics and information theory and is an independent learner and problem solver who can quickly devise solutions and pivot with the team to build a physical product.
Key Responsibilities
Design and perform simulations and algorithms to optimize various imaging and sensing applications for our prototype device.
Develop algorithms to extract information from photons.
Validate algorithms through comparison with experimental results and analytical solutions.
Develop machine learning or statistical tools for object classification, parameter estimation, or state detection.
Work closely with experimental teams to ensure algorithms align with hardware constraints.
Document code, algorithms, and simulation results for internal and external use.
Qualifications
Required:
Ph.D. (or exceptional M.S. plus 5 years' experience) in Physics, Electrical or Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or related field with focus on quantum optics and/or quantum information theory.
5+ years of experience in Research of Quantum Optics or Quantum Information Theory or related field (in Academia or Industry or Startup).
Strong proficiency in programming languages for simulations (Python, MATLAB, R).
Deep understanding of quantum optics concepts (e.g., photon statistics, entanglement, interferometry).
Deep understanding of information theory, error correction, and communication protocols.
Experience developing and implementing numerical algorithms.
Experience with machine learning algorithms.
Proven track record shown in journal publication and conference proceedings.Preferred:
Experience with optical neural networks modeling and simulation.
Experience with optical hardware and experimental work.
Experience in Defense and Space technologies.Export Control
Candidates should have capacity to comply with the federally mandated requirements of U.S. export control laws.
Benefits:
Competitive salary and equity options.
Medical, dental and vision on 1st day
Company 401K match
Hybrid/flexible work environment
A collaborative and innovative work environment with opportunities for professional growth
The chance to work on transformative technologies to be deployed in Space
