Director of Project Management
The Director of Project Management leads the Project Management team, including Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and Assistant Project Managers, and is responsible for the successful delivery of high-end, architecturally complex residential construction projects. This role provides leadership, mentorship, and strategic oversight across active projects while supporting alignment with the Executive Team, Finance, Field Operations, and Accounting.
The Director ensures that each project is executed with consistency, attention to detail, and adherence to MatPel Builders standards for craftsmanship, professionalism, and long-term client satisfaction. This position fosters accountability and development within the department and plays a critical role in advancing the companys operational and strategic goals.
Core Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Oversight
Provide guidance, mentorship, and accountability to Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and Assistant Project Managers
Step into a project leadership role when needed due to long-term absences, staffing transitions, or scheduling conflicts
Support professional development through performance evaluations, regular feedback, and individual growth planning
Collaborate with the Executive Team to assess and plan staffing needs across current and future projects
Project Financial Management
Work closely with the CFO and project teams to implement and monitor financials on a weekly basis
Help teams interpret cost reports, manage budgets, and track financial performance
Participate in project kickoff meetings to reinforce key contract terms and financial expectations
Project Execution and Support
Maintain a working knowledge of each projects goals, milestones, and key risks
Monitor project performance to ensure alignment with scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations
Provide additional oversight on projects that are complex, high-visibility, or experiencing challenges
Support project teams in resolving issues and coordinating across departments as needed
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Coordinate with Field Operations and maintain an understanding of superintendent responsibilities to ensure strong field-to-office communication
Work with Accounting to support reporting requirements and ensure timely, accurate financial coordination
Promote consistent project communication, documentation, and deliverables across all teams
Standards and Consistency
Reinforce adherence to project scopes, contract terms, and company quality standards
Help ensure consistent execution across all projects, supporting a unified approach to client service and delivery
Qualifications
Minimum of 8 years of experience leading high-end residential construction projects valued at $10M or more, with direct responsibility for architecturally complex work.
Experience managing and mentoring senior-level project staff
Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Architecture, or related field, or equivalent experience
Strong knowledge of contracts, construction sequencing, financial tracking, and technical documentation
Familiarity with superintendent roles and coordination with field operations
Experience working directly with accounting and finance teams on reporting and cost control
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Procore, Bluebeam, and scheduling software
Strong written and verbal communication skills with a solutions-oriented mindset
Valid drivers license and ability to travel as required
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Ability to work in both office and active construction site environments
Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds
Exposure to a variety of weather conditions and construction-related environments
Regular use of computer, phone, and office equipment
