Job Description

A Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card is required for employment at Gila Community College.Essential Functions

Ability to perform general physical activities that require coordination and considerable use of arms and/or legs and whole-body movement such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, carrying objects and handling tools and materials.

Ability to stand and move comfortably for several hours at a time.

Ability to operate cleaning and/or light construction equipment and handle hazardous materials in a safe and effective manner.

Perform duties under direct supervision following procedures, instructions, directions, and training given.

Minimal independent decision making.Duties and Responsibilities

Custodial Workers are expected to perform any or all duties listed below in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

Keep to cleaning schedules that are set-up by the cleaning supervisor in the organization, i.e., cleaning of windows, mopping floors, dusting, and sweeping.

Empty trash bins on a regular basis.

Put up signs to signal wet floors during cleaning or to show any other form of safety situation in the surroundings.

Re-stock materials like toilet paper and hand towels in the washrooms.

Perform extra cleaning duties as instructed by supervisors.

Make sure assigned cleaning tasks are executed in a timely and orderly manner.

Work as part of a team to execute cleaning duties and to make sure that standards (of neatness/cleanliness) are maintained.

Make reports to supervisor concerning repairs that are needed that have been noticed while performing daily duties.

Work with Maintenance staff as necessary and/or perform some maintenance and repair duties to keep all facilities in good repair and functioning properly.

Move heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies, either manually or with hand trucks.

If unintended/unsafe contact with hazardous materials occurs, inform the supervisor and the appropriate authorities to handle the situation.

Prescribe appropriate cleaning materials and products needed for disinfecting and sanitizing the entire building according to the organization’s standards.

Always maintain proper cleaning schedules, cleaning logs, and other custodial records that show areas of the building that have been cleaned.

Perform similar duties not specifically listed as directed.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Ability to pass a background screening process and/or obtain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card is necessary.

Must be familiar with or have good knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures.

Ability to work cooperatively with others and maintain a positive attitude.

Must be willing to work either 3-7pm or 5-9pm, max hours per week 19.5.Preferred Skills

Familiarity with and understanding of safe work practices particularly when performing general physical activities, handling hazardous materials, and operating tools and equipment.

Must be willing to offer help to both staff and customers of the organization whenever it is needed.

Must have good interpersonal skills to be able to have a good relationship with fellow custodians, customers, and staff of the organization.

Must be proactive when it comes to carrying out his/her duties.

Must be honest, truthful, and be able to strictly maintain confidentiality as he/she will have access to people’s belongings and work data/information.

Must be self-motivated and a diligent worker.

Previous working experience as a custodian/janitor will be a plus.

Work Environment

Duties are performed in varied environments including outdoor and indoor sites. Exposure to hot or cold temperatures and/or wind, rain, snow, or other weather may occur. Exposure to hazardous materials and moderate to high noise levels is anticipated. Operation of tools and equipment involves the ability to repetitively manipulate objects from light to substantial weight using both fine and gross motor skills.
