Job Description

SUMMARY:

Welders/Shipfitters are expected to perform certified aluminum welding in all positions with either MIG or TIG machines to classification society requirements, whether in shops or on boats. Must be able to work from drawings, welding prints, specifications, bills-of-material, memos, other information or management instruction. Welders/Shipfitters must be able to weld components as directed by fitters or metal fabricators: assists fitter or performs fitter functions to position, align, and fit together properly fabricated and prepared plates, structural shapes and weldments in preparation for assembly into the hull/superstructure or other fabricated parts. Welders are responsible for proper cleaning, preparation and welding of all components.

WORKING MATERIALS:

Must be able to work with various welding alloy wires, coated and uncoated sticks, inert and consumable gasses; aluminum plates and extrusions, stainless steel and occasional non-ferrous materials common to yacht building practices.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Must have the ability to safely and properly operate equipment such as: shears, presses, rolls, grinders, chippers, air-saws, jigs, fixtures, cutting equipment, welder, clamps and hand and power tools. Each person must directly supply their own hand tools per the attached tool list and must have them available in the yard and in working order throughout their employment period.

SKILL LEVELS AND ADVANCEMENT:

Welder/Shipfitter employees are categorized into three different skill levels beginning with level 1, with the highest level being 3. The advancement of an employee to a higher skill/wage level shall be made only when the Company has a continuing need for an employee to perform work at that level and when the employee convincingly meets the next level’s criteria. An employee’s immediate supervisor may recommend that they be advanced. This nomination will be reviewed by at least the Director of Manufacturing for approval with input from the Metals Manager or Welding Coordinator. Employees should expect that based on the ability of the person involved, they may move up a level or stay at the current level for longer periods than others working around them. In extremely rare cases, some may remain at their current skill level indefinitely. Although this would not be the Company’s goal, and likely not the goal of most employees, management does recognize that certain individuals are either unable or unwilling to learn the skills required to attain a higher level. Some employees may learn and adapt more quickly than others. EDUCATION:

High school or technical school where print reading, basic measurement skills and tool use has been learned

Welder/Shipfitter – Skill Level 1

Employees in this level are expected to demonstrate through a positive attitude towards their job and the company, they are anxious to learn the trade and contribute positively to the company’s goals. They are expected to begin to formally educate themselves technically.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Demonstrate proficiency in reading blueprints

2. Perform basic layout work

3. Practice sound welding methods and proper welding procedures

4. Assist Shipfitters and perform fitting functions in setting up and aligning parts/components 5. Clean materials prior to and after welding

6. Cut, grind, clean and finish welded components so they may be fitted properly to a unit and so that the finished weld meets quality and appearance requirements

7. Perform minor repairs to welding equipment

8. Determine proper welding wires for the job

9. Possess knowledge of standard weld symbols and ability to interpret weld schedules

10. Maintain welder, torch and tips for maximum quality performance

11. Make frequent checks during welding process as to dimensions, irregularities, etc., and take corrective measures where appropriate to minimize distortion

12. Perform V-out for welding

13. Maintain and ensure required quality by regular self inspection and asking for critique from more experienced co-workers and supervisors

14. Produce work that is accurate, of the required quality with the proper appearance and within a reasonable and acceptable time period

15. Demonstrate ability to follow instructions and policies that can be given either orally or in written form

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

1.Read and write in English

2.Use decimal or fractional tape measure

3. Physical strength to perform work standing, bending, squatting, kneeling and climbing

4.Work with hands and arms overhead for extended periods

5. Possess willingness and ability to learn new jobs and take instructions

6.Be flexible and willing to work various shift schedules as required

Welder/Shipfitter – Skill Level 2

For employees to advance to this level, they are expected to demonstrate that they are anxious to progress in the trade, have started to broaden their skills and have gained more experience. At this level, the quality, appearance, accuracy and quantity of their work will become key elements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform all skill level 1 duties and responsibilities

2. Perform advanced layout work

3. MIG weld below waterline with minimum defects

4. MIG weld tanks with minimum defects

5. Perform certified welds in MIG and TIG, all positions on ferrous and non-ferrous metals

6. Perform overhead position welding

7. Perform vertical going up position welding

8. Perform weld in flat and horizontal positions

9. Plan, set-up and fabricate using the most efficient procedures and sequences for such weldments to obtain proper quality and strength and conform to welding schedules or blueprints

10. Plasma gouge/cutting properly

11. Select the proper machine/gun/tips for the job

12. Set-up, adjust and operate all types of welding equipment

13. Train others to ABS standards

14. Weld with a mirror in all positions

15. Make needed adjustments to the welding machines and to obtain sound welds

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

1. All skill level 1 qualifications and requirements

2. Possess a background consistent with requirements for skill level 2

Welder/Shipfitter – Skill Level 3

For employees to advance to this level, they are expected to have demonstrated that they consistently produce high quality work in a given time frame and that they can work independently with little or no supervision. They are further expected to have demonstrated that they belong on top of their field and have a thorough working knowledge of how other trades interface with their department in order to efficiently meet our production and quality goals

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform all skill level 1 and 2 duties and responsibilities

2. Perform extensive layout work

3. Perform certified welds on pipe or tubing using heli-arc or MIG welding

4. Demonstrate consistency and proficiency in all trade related knowledge and experience

5. Possess ability and willingness to successfully train at least one level 1 and/or level 2 employee and may from time to time be required to direct at least two other employees while still accomplishing own work on schedule

6. If skill set permits, employee may be asked to perform material analyst job functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

1. All skill level 1 and 2 qualifications and requirements

2. Possess a background consistent with requirements for skill level 3

Welding Coordinator – Skill Level 4

A level 4 employee is expected to have demonstrated leadership and technical skills as a level 3 employee and have the ability to work as a department coordinator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform all Level 3 Welding duties and responsibilities as necessary in support of the company’s goals and commitments

2. Follow up on progress of welding projects and assist in problem solving

3. In the absence of the Metals Manager, the Welding Coordinator must be able to: a. Communicate with other departments concerning problems related to materials, technical requirements, manpower, scheduling and work coordination, etc. b. Provide input regarding daily timesheet reviews c. Attend meetings as required

4. With the Metals Manager, plan and coordinate work in support of the production schedules for the Welders on a daily, weekly and long term basis to:

a. Determine Welders personnel requirements for each project

b. Determine support requirements from other departments

c. Provide subcontractor support where planned or required

d. Ensure project milestones are met

e. Evaluate progress and provide estimates of work hours remaining and completion dates

f. Identify material requirements, scheduling and delivery status verification

5. Assist the Metals Manager with Welder evaluations by submitting input on employee performance and attitude

6. Work with the Metals Manager, Quality Systems Manager and Warranty Manager to identify and implement strategies to:

a. Determine equipment, system and process improvements

b. Determine ways to control waste

c. Encourage ideas and innovation to control production costs and reduce warranty issues

d. Resolve problems and prevent recurring issues

7. Work with Engineering, Metals Manager and other coordinators to:

a. Ensure equipment, furnishings, piping and wiring are installed correctly to enable proper maintenance and maintain the vessel’s design characteristics

b. Ensure detailed information necessary to complete tasks is available through prints and direct communication with the Engineering Department

c. Ensure production drawings are reviewed prior to construction and feedback regarding clarity, content, ideas or issues are provided

d. Provide technical support as required

8. Ensure the welding work is in accordance with Burger Boat Company standards of quality and workmanship

9. Ensure all equipment and furnishings, whether installed or awaiting installation, are properly protected regardless of who is responsible for the area

10. Ensure workspaces are maintained in a clean and orderly condition

11. Maintain and protect production drawings and ensure only current revisions are used for production work

12. Train and mentor for assigned personnel

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

1. All skill level 1 through 3 qualifications and requirements

2. Possess a background consistent with requirements for skill level 4
