POSITION: Transportation Operations Specialist / Substitute Driver
QUALIFICATIONS:
Be a resident at least 21 years of age and have at least 12 months driving experience
Have no more than 4 points against driver's license within the last 12 months
All applicants are subject to a SLED check of criminal history and any other checks required by law or deemed necessary by District Five
Have a valid South Carolina driver's license
Successfully complete a school bus driver's training class of 20 hours and successfully pass a physical performance test
All Bus Drivers are required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and will be subjected to random drug and alcohol testing
CDL with passenger endorsement preferred
Drivers are responsible for obtaining a Department of Transportation physical and proof of a clear tuberculosis test completed with the last 12 months. Copies of the applicants official birth certification, Social Security card, and driver's license are also required.
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision assists the Transportation Department in coordinating and finalizing advanced transportation logistics, including field trips, extracurricular travel, and special programs. This role ensures that all trips are scheduled, reconciled, and permitted in accordance with district and state requirements. Additionally, the position assists with behavior monitoring through video footage review and serves as a qualified substitute bus driver as needed.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operational Support:
Assist in scheduling and coordinating advanced trip requests for athletics, extracurricular activities, and special programs.
Complete trip details such as bus accommodations, assignments, route, special needs equipment, and billing/invoicing details.
Process and submit required permits for the use of state-owned buses (as applicable).
Maintain accurate trip records and communicate with school staff and coaches regarding trip confirmations and changes.
Monitor trip calendars and ensure transportation logistics align with school schedules and activity needs.
Assist in reviewing on-board video footage to support investigations into student behavior incidents, safety concerns, or driver reports. (student issues only, not personnel issues)
Maintain accurate ridership logs as it relates to Special needs transportation services and ensure timely entries are submitted to the State Department of Education
Supports Transportation Office Staff during route time to include clerical support and general office responsibilities as needed.
Substitute Driving:
Serve as a substitute driver for morning/afternoon routes as needed for both Regular Ed/SNT routes.
Maintain student safety and order while operating the bus in compliance with district and state transportation regulations.
Provide a relief bus to drivers that require transferring students during emergencies.
Performs other related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Bus Work is conducted primarily on a school bus where one is required to drive in varying weather conditions which means exposure to conditions such as heat, cold, rain, humidity, etc., and at times to drive on poor road conditions. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and awareness. Physical demands are related to the operation of a school bus wherein one is required to drive, operate handbrake and other controls, and maintain cleanliness of equipment. Routine local travel is required to transport to and from school; no overnight travel is required.
