The Polymer Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of sheet molding compound formulations used in the manufacturing process. This role ensures that all formulations provide adequate manufacturability while meeting required product performance specifications and quality standards. The Polymer Process Engineer will collaborate with engineering, production, procurement, research, and quality teams to optimize SMC performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Manage the design, development, and use of SMC formulations to manufacture compression molded parts
Oversee raw material screening and routine testing
Manage experiments to evaluate the use of alternate raw materials
Compare SMC-based product performance to requirements and formulate to optimize cost and product performance
Collaborate with product management teams to launch new products
Collaborate with procurement and research teams on vendor selection to optimize product performance and cost
Develop and maintain documentation for SMC formulations and related testing procedures.
Train and mentor team members on SMC production and testing best practices and safety procedures.
Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies.
Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for SMC-related issues.
Support lean manufacturing initiatives and contribute to cost reduction efforts.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science
Minimum of 5 years of experience in sheeting molding compound design and management within a manufacturing environment.
Strong knowledge of SMC compression molding.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Effective communication and leadership skills.
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles is a plus.
