MAJOR FUNCTIONS
Under the guidance and leadership of the Director of Public Works, the Equipment Operator II is an advanced-skilled work in the operations of heavy construction equipment, heavy tractors, earth moving equipment and vehicles utilized in the sanitation industry. This position requires extensive operation in traffic, confined spaces and near ongoing hazards. Safety is a critical aspect relating to this position. Duties include the performance of manual labor tasks in addition to the operations of equipment.
This position is designated as an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).

Drives and operates a truck, trailer or boom truck combination vehicle used to collect and haul yard trash and bulk waste from an assigned collection route.
Navigates various streets in and around the City in a safe and efficient manner.
Strong attention to detail and a desire to maintain a clean and safe environment are critical.
Maintains strong awareness of the risks involved in the operation of heavy equipment near people, property and the natural environment.
Express a strong desire to represent the City in a positive manner when engaging with citizens.
Operates other related solid waste equipment.
Perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections for all equipment assigned.
Checks equipment for routine servicing needs and maintenance work when required.
Cleans solid waste debris off equipment and inside the truck body daily.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of standard and specialized solid waste equipment.
Excellent knowledge of traffic regulations and safe driving practices.
Ability to read and navigate large vehicles in confined spaces.
Ability to read a map and follow navigation directions.
Ability to learn, understand and retain directions, including routes as necessary.
Skill in the care and safe operation of assigned equipment.
Ability to carry out oral and/or written instructions in a courteous, professional, and team-focused manner.
Strong communication skills to provide feedback to others relating to issues presented during the daily route.
Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and team-focused working relationships with team members, leaders, other departments and the general public.
Knowledge of hazardous types of waste/materials and the proper handling of these types of substances.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Must possess and maintain a valid CDL Class B License with/air brakes endorsement.
A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Consistently - Lift/Carry: 10 lbs. or less, Push/Pull: 10 lbs. or less, Handling/Fine Motor Skills, Sit, Walk, Type/Keyboard, Drive.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a vehicle and outside year-round and with some exposure to all weather conditions.
