Job Description

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing water and sewer infrastructure. This position may also be required to perform maintenance of equipment, city streets, and collecting brush.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

Inspects and/or repairs booster pump stations, meters, drainage systems, and wastewater systems at frequent intervals to ensure all aspects of the system are functioning properly.

Assists Water Division with repairs of the booster pump station.

Maintain a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activity.

Determine the location of gas, telephone, power, television, fiberoptics, water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.

Contact residents and business owners in area where services will be interrupted and explain when service will be shut off and how soon service will be restored.

Insure the proper maintenance and cleanliness of equipment and tools prior to and after use.

Operates dump trucks, mowers, service trucks, and other equipment as needed.

Assist in preventative maintenance of the sewer collection system.

Perform routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to the supervisor.

Performs unskilled manual labor as needed in a variety of maintenance and construction projects within the Water/Wastewater Division including but not limited to: pavement cutting, ditch digging, main and pipe repair, laying, and backfilling.

Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.

Perform all maintenance and repairs to lift stations including work on electrical control panel.

Help Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plants as needed.

Cut, fit, lay, tap, clean, repair, and flush water mains, install services, fire hydrants, and assists in shutting off broken sections of water main.

Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Maintain a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activity.

Use leak detection equipment and recordkeeping involved in the process.

Pressure test new water and sewer lines, pull water samples, and conduct mandrel testing of sewer mains as required by the State of Arkansas.

Complete work orders involving reading water meters, disconnecting and/or reconnecting water meters, install new water meter, replace dead meters, and provide accurate and timely information in meter book for Utility Billing.

Performs system mapping, valve numbering, and GPS field work and coordinate information with the GIS Analyst in the Engineering Division.

Works after hours due to water or sewer line breaks and shares in the on-call rotation.

Install and change out water meters, providing accurate date to Utility Billing.

Substitute meter reader if necessary.

Performs locates on the water and sewer systems in compliance with Arkansas One Call.

Completes required on-going training to maintain Water Distribution License.

Other duties as required or assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one (1) to three (3) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must hold a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, cold, wet or humid conditions (non-weather related). The incumbent works in high precarious places and works near moving mechanical parts and is at risk of electrical shock and or vibration. The incumbent is exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
