The Emergency Room Technician supports the professional nursing staff in the Emergency Department by performing patient care tasks that do not require licensure. This includes assisting with activities of daily living, maintaining the treatment environment, monitoring ECGs, performing phlebotomy and EKGs, and supporting overall emergency care workflows. The ER Tech plays a vital role in ensuring timely, efficient, and compassionate care for all patients.Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support & Patient Care
Escort and transport patients throughout the facility
Perform comfort and safety measures, including personal hygiene, linen changes, and elimination assistance
Obtain and document vital signs during triage
Assist with blood collection (phlebotomy) and basic wound care
Apply and monitor ECG leads, oxygen saturation, and automated BP devices
Recognize and report life-threatening ECG dysrhythmias or changes to RN/Physician
Assist in CPR during Code 99 emergencies
Help physicians with suturing, casting, traction, and other minor procedures
Insert uncomplicated Foley catheters
Immobilize body parts as directed
Administrative & Environmental Support
Act as a stand-in unit secretary as needed
Answer phones, make calls, and post lab results
Document ECG strips in patient charts and monitor documentation per protocol
Clean, restock, and organize treatment rooms and supply areas
Maintain orthopedic equipment, dispose of trash/linens, and ensure a clean work environment
Assist with storing and transporting supplies and equipment
Communication & Teamwork
Collaborate with physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, patients, and families
Practice high-touch, compassionate guest relations
Support ongoing performance improvement initiatives
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions
Basic computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Current BCLS (Basic Life Support) certification
Nationally Registered EMT (NR-EMT) or Junior/Senior Nursing Student preferred
