Unit Overview
The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at GW Hospital provides both pre-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures. As part of a high-acuity surgical services team, the Pre-Op RN plays a vital role in preparing patients for surgery serving as the first clinical touchpoint in the perioperative process. The PACU supports over 15 operating rooms and collaborates closely with anesthesiology, surgical specialties, and critical care teams.
Position Summary
As a Pre-Op RN, you will perform focused assessments, obtain necessary documentation, and provide education and emotional support to patients preparing for surgery. You’ll ensure that all pre-surgical requirements are met—minimizing delays, flagging concerns, and setting the tone for safe and successful outcomes.
Main Tasks
• Conduct comprehensive pre-operative nursing assessments
• Review consents, labs, diagnostics, and surgical clearances
• Administer medications and start IVs as needed
• Educate patients and families on surgical and anesthesia expectations
• Ensure pre-op checklists are completed and documented accurately
• Communicate effectively with the OR, anesthesia, and admitting teams
• Manage a diverse surgical caseload in a high-volume, fast-paced setting

Qualifications
Required:
• DC RN license (or eligible for endorsement)
• 1 year of inpatient acute care RN experience
• BLS (AHA)
Preferred:
• Prior experience in PACU, Pre-Op, ICU, ED, or surgical nursing
• ACLS certification
• BSN or obtain within 5 years
