This position works in Police - Court Services. This is responsible custodial work on an assigned shift guarding incarcerated prisoners in the Justice Administration Building. An employee of this class assigned to a locked maximum security area housing prisoner cells, maintains surveillance over prisoners to ensure their security and welfare, requests cessation of damage to cells, verbally quells minor disturbances and performs related clerical duties. Any unusual circumstances or prisoner complaints are reported immediately to the R.C.M.P. member responsible for the cell area. Guards may search and escort prisoners, as required. Under immediate supervision, some independence of judgement is exercised while ensuring security or attending to welfare of prisoners. Work is reviewed regularly by a supervisor to ensure incumbents' continued alertness and adherence to well defined practices and procedures. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include up to high school graduation and some experience including the ability to effectively guard individuals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some knowledge of policies and procedures involved in control, custody and welfare of prisoners. As a Custodial Guard, you will have the ability to maintain alertness in a confined area housing prisoner cells and have physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work. Safety Orientated First Aid Certificate (St. John Ambulance) or equivalent with CPR/AED – Level C is required. The incumbent will be required to obtain and maintain an RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance.
Schedule: 42 hours weekly; 2 Day Shifts from 6 AM – 6 PM followed by 2 Night Shifts from 6 PM – 6 AM (4 days on, 4 days off.
