POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Regional Pharmacist plays a vital role in maintaining uninterrupted pharmacy services across a multi-state network of long-term care and behavioral health pharmacies. This position provides on-site pharmacist coverage during both scheduled and unscheduled absences (e.g., PTO, sick leave, leaves of absence) to ensure continuity of operations, regulatory compliance, and patient safety.
When not actively staffing a pharmacy, the Regional Pharmacist works under the direction of the Regional Director of Pharmacy to support operational initiatives, staff development, training, and process improvement projects that enhance performance and service quality across sites.
This is a highly adaptable and travel-intensive role requiring strong clinical knowledge, leadership presence, and the ability to quickly integrate into different pharmacy environments, workflows, and regulatory frameworks.
To excel in this position, a Regional Pharmacist must demonstrate the ability to:
Respond rapidly and flexibly to site needs with short notice, managing shifting priorities and dynamic schedules.
Represent pharmacy leadership on-site during coverage, reinforcing operational consistency, safety standards, and company values.
Identify and address workflow inconsistencies, contributing to the development and standardization of best practices across pharmacies.
Communicate clearly and proactively with the Regional Pharmacy Director, staff, and corporate leadership during site assignments and after transitions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Staffing Coverage & Operational Continuity (40%)
Provide on-site pharmacist coverage across multiple pharmacy locations in the region to support continuity of operations during scheduled and unscheduled absences.
Perform standard pharmacist duties including:
Clinical review and verification of medication orders for accuracy, appropriateness, and safety.
Oversight of safe and accurate medication preparation, dispensing, and documentation processes.
Collaboration with prescribers, nurses, and care coordinators to address medication related concerns and ensure timely therapy access.
Supervision of pharmacy technician workflows to ensure adherence to operational procedures and regulatory standards.
Monitoring controlled substance documentation and performing regular checks to ensure compliance with DEA and state Board of Pharmacy requirements.
Support to Director & Regional Operations (60%)
• When not actively staffing a pharmacy, the Regional Pharmacist will:
Assist in the onboarding and training of new pharmacists and technicians, helping to standardize competencies and support a consistent standard of care across sites.
Participate in workflow analysis and improvement initiatives, including policy implementation, system optimization, and pharmacy efficiency efforts.
Serve as a resource for pharmacy teams, offering support with day-to-day operational questions and escalating issues to leadership when necessary.
Collect and review operational data, identify performance trends, and contribute to action plans that improve site outcomes and efficiency.
Assist with special projects as directed by the Regional Director of Pharmacy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Licensure
Graduation from a School of Pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) or certified by the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC); Baccalaureate or PharmD degree required.
Active and unrestricted pharmacist license in at least one applicable state; must be willing and able to obtain additional licensure in other applicable states within six (6) months of employment.
Immunization certification and Basic Life Support (BLS) training preferred.
Experience
Minimum three (3) years of pharmacist experience, with at least one (1) year of experience in a leadership, supervisory, or support role preferred.
Familiarity with closed-door pharmacy operations and cycle fill workflows.
Skills & Competencies
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead, coach, and collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams.
Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to work independently in fast-paced or unfamiliar settings.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Experience with RX30 and electronic health record (EHR) systems (AccuFlo, QuickMAR, or similar platforms).
WORK ENVIRONMENT & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires frequent travel to pharmacies across multiple states; overnight travel and flexible scheduling are expected based on operational needs.
Must be comfortable working in varied pharmacy environments, including adapting to different staffing models and patient populations.
Must be able to lift, carry, or move up to 20 pounds and stand for extended periods during shifts.
