A.I.S., Inc.(AIS)is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

AIS is looking for a motivated Research Assistant to support the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) Senior Scientist in the development and publication of scientific manuscripts.

Primary Function:

The research assistant will manage literature searches, organize and maintain bibliographic databases, and contribute to writing and editing scientific documents. This role is ideal for a candidate with a strong academic background in marine science, fisheries, or ecosystem science who is looking to expand their experience in technical writing and research publication.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Conduct thorough literature searches using academic databases (e.g., Web of Science)

Compile, organize, and maintain bibliographic references using tools such as Zotero or EndNote

Provide regular updates of bibliographic resources to the Senior Scientist

Assist in revising document outlines and inserting accurate references into manuscripts

Contribute to the drafting and co-editing of scientific manuscripts and reports

Ensure logical flow and proper referencing of all manuscript content

Track document progress and support the development of peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and technical reports

Maintain awareness of current scientific literature relevant to assigned topics

Provide weekly status reports on progress toward manuscript completion and literature management tasks

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates depth of experience. This is a fulltime position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree (M.S.) in marine science, fisheries, ecosystems, resource economics, or a related field, with experience conducting literature reviews and supporting manuscript preparation

Proven experience managing academic literature and reference databases (e.g., Zotero, EndNote)

Strong scientific writing and editing skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex topics

Knowledge of scientific publishing standards, formatting, and citation protocols

Ability to work collaboratively with senior researchers and contribute independently to research products

Experience organizing literature and structuring manuscripts based on outlines

Familiarity with the publication submission and peer review process

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a related field with demonstrated experience leading manuscript development and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals
