You in This Role & on the Team As a Drone Build Technician at Unusual Machines, you’ll be part of the core team that brings our high-performance FPV drones to life. You’ll work alongside passionate builders, pilots, and designers to assemble, program, and test custom drones for our Rotor Riot brand—known for industry-leading quality and innovation.
This role is hands-on, fast-paced, and highly collaborative. You'll be directly responsible for the builds our customers trust in the field, whether they're racing, freestyling, or flying for professional work. Your attention to detail and craftsmanship will ensure each drone leaves our shop flight-ready and dialed in.
A Day in the Life
Here’s what a typical day might look like in this role:
Solder motors, ESCs, receivers, and cameras with precision and care
Assemble drones from the ground up using various components and frames
Configure drones using Betaflight and tune them for optimal flight
Troubleshoot technical issues and perform detailed repairs
Conduct flight tests and PID tuning when needed
Collaborate with the design and media team on custom builds
Track parts, manage your bench’s inventory, and help improve workflow
Perform quality control checks before final delivery or shipping
Stay updated on new gear, trends, and firmware in the FPV world
Requirements
What You’ll Bring to the Team
Proven experience soldering and working with small electronics
Familiarity with drone build processes and key components
Working knowledge of Betaflight and flight controller configuration
Ability to troubleshoot issues with motors, ESCs, receivers, and VTX systems
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality
A team mindset with excellent communication and a willingness to learn
Comfort using multimeters, soldering tools, and diagnostic gear
Passion for FPV drones and building things that fly
Bonus Points (Preferred, but not required)
Hands-on experience building and flying FPV drones
Understanding of radio systems like Crossfire, ELRS, or Ghost
Familiarity with analog and digital VTX systems (DJI, Walksnail, HDZero)
Experience with 3D printing, CAD, or creating custom drone parts
Ability to read Blackbox logs and tune drones accordingly
Knowledge of LiPo battery safety and charging protocols
Hobbyist or professional background in drone racing, freestyle, or cinematic flying
