This role is for a Controls Engineer / PLC Programmer—specifically someone who is hands-on in the debug, programming, and commissioning phases of industrial automation equipment projects. Here’s a breakdown and then a sourcing strategy with outreach messaging.

Role Breakdown

Job Title Suggestion: Controls Engineer – Automotive Automation (Ford Experience Required)

Key Responsibilities:

Programming & Debug: Using Siemens Step 7 and TIA Portal to write/debug PLC programs (ladder logic), particularly for Ford automation cells.

Retooling Support: Update existing automation stations with new programming.

On-Site Commissioning: Startup, debug, and customer buyoff of automation systems.

System Validation: Power-up checks, interface verification, safety compliance, and cycle time testing.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Works closely with electricians, mechanical builders, pipe fitters, robot programmers, and project managers.

Documentation: Final program and drawing updates for the controls team.

Required Skills:

Siemens PLCs: Step 7, TIA Portal

Ford Programming Standards: Must have prior experience with Ford automation systems.

Ladder Logic & Electrical Schematics

Understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical sequencing

Strong troubleshooting and commissioning experience

Familiar with robot interface protocols (e.g., FANUC, ABB, KUKA, etc.)

Location Considerations: Must be able to work on-site at both the automation supplier and Ford plants. Some travel expected.

Ideal Candidate Profile

5–10+ years of hands-on experience in controls engineering, PLC programming, or automation integration.

Must have worked with Ford Motor Company (directly or through suppliers).

Strong knowledge of Siemens hardware/software.

Familiar with automotive assembly or body-in-white (BIW) systems.

Comfortable in high-stakes, deadline-driven commissioning environments.

Education

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year College or university, or university program certificate and five to nine years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
