Senior Developer & Lecturer – Nautical

JOB PURPOSE
BAE Systems is the UK Government’s nominated Prime Contractor under the Government-to-Government arrangements that are in place to provide equipment, support and training to Saudi Arabia. We provide maintenance of Royal Saudi Air Force aircraft and train RSAF personnel safely in a training environment in how to use their aircraft, equipment and weapons.

The post holder will be expected to deliver training and develop courses and learning experiences as required. They will fully participate in the delivery of UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Transport General Authority (TGA) and Saudi Ports Authority (SPA) training programs ranging from deck hands to deck officers, and Master mariners Certificate of Competence.
The training will be delivered in a purpose-built facility utilising advance simulation and emulation techniques. This includes classroom delivery, placement and progress testing/marking, internal verification and preparation for quality audits by awarding bodies or qualification regulators e.g. MCA (UK), TGA, TVTC, COE, City & Guilds.
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
The post holder is responsible for:
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in implementation of the associated policies and procedures within the NMA.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in the implementation of the NMA’s commercial strategies in line with the NMA’s strategic priorities.
Assisting and participating in the development of curriculum team groupings to promote an industry focused tertiary educational model.
Inspiring staff to be creative and innovative in all aspects of pedagogy and for promoting and embedding Blended Learning across all curriculum areas.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in the operational planning and delivery of the Nautical/STCW curriculum provision targets.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in ensuring all courses within the area of responsibility have the awarding body approvals where required.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in the review of existing QMS to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the Industry, NMA and the awarding bodies.
Ensuring performance targets within the area of responsibility are met.
Providing guidance and assistance to the team in order to provide a valuable student experience.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in the continued implementation of a PMS for all teaching and learning equipment within the area of responsibility.
Ensuring teaching content and methods of delivery are in accordance with equal opportunities, are compliant with NMA’s standards and are fully accessible.
Participation in regular team meetings with all concerned staff.
Ensuring students receive regular feedback on their performance in accordance with the QMS.
Participating in the student disciplinary process and conduct within the Curriculum area, as required.
Assisting with and supporting the continued implementation of coherent academic guidance systems in line with NMA policy.
Assisting to ensure course approvals for each course from the MCA and other awarding bodies are in place.
Participation in the development and delivery of all courses in the Deck curriculum area
Assisting PM, as required, with the project management of new bespoke marine and Ports related commercial courses.
Acting as academy’s TRB (Training Record Book) advisor for all students following the NS route.
Assisting Curriculum Manager with the academy signoff of all NS TRBs as required.
Assisting with the delivery of preparatory course for SQA/ MCA written and MCA orals examinations
Assisting with short courses involving functioning and resourcing of the Ship Simulators.
Assisting with further development and delivery of STCW Short courses such as ECDIS Generic, ECDIS type specific, GMDSS GOC, GMDSS ROC and NAEST Operational Theory element, as required.
Inputting and uploading data on TMIS/LMS, once installed and implemented at NMA, regarding necessary training and delivery related information and ensuring course material and quality data is regularly updated and maintained as required.
Providing an engaging and valuable learner experience.
Delivering teaching and learning and ensuring it is of the highest standard and responsive to the needs of their learners, including:
Establishing and maintaining high levels of professional conduct.
Improving the quality of teaching and learning delivered, through internal verification.
Ensuring learners receive regular and effective feedback on their performance.
Assessing and recording learner achievement.
Assisting in learner guidance and support.
Acting as Academic Supervisor for nominated learners.
Providing a first point of contact for learner feedback and support.
Ensuring that the targets for the improvement in quality of learning, teaching and attainment are achieved.
Delivering and sustaining improvements in learner achievement.
Ensuring that the Health and Safety of learners is always considered.
Assisting in the discipline of learners at the academy through appropriate supervision and challenging behaviours as a front-end response.
Acting as unit champion/internal verifier for Nautical Science.
Conducting invigilation duties during assessments as required.
Developing high-quality learning and teaching materials.
Creating and developing courses to meet a client/customers’ requirements.
Updating and maintaining learner records and reports as required.
Ensuring that the targets for learner retention and achievement are achieved.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in achieving their operational plan and the delivery of the NMA’s curriculum provision targets.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in the deployment and enhancement of the QMS that meets the needs of the Industry, NMA and the awarding bodies, by providing SME input.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in the deployment and development of a planned maintenance system for all teaching and learning equipment within the area of responsibility.
Assisting the Curriculum Manager in meeting awarding body requirements and achieving awarding body approvals.
Actively participating in Continuous Professional Development.
Any other duties as required by the line manager consistent with the key responsibilities and duties of the post as directed.
RECRUITMENT SPECIFICATION
Holds a Higher National Diploma or a Foundation Degree in a relevant maritime or naval discipline.
A Management Level Certificate of Competency (under STCW [Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping] II/2) or an equivalent certification, issued by MCA (UK) or a relevant government authority e.g. Royal Navy
Experience of working on board ships in a senior navigating/deck or an engineering officer capacity.
A teaching qualification, such as PGCE or Teacher Qualification in Further Education (TQFE) UK or a Saudi equivalent.
Experience of operational management in curriculum delivery including participation or providing assistance in effective development, deployment and leadership of staff.
Experience in the planning, development, approval process and the delivery of Nautical Science/Maritime core curriculum and the underpinning knowledge as per the STCW.
Experience in undertaking, implementing and promoting aspects of quality management system and self-evaluation processes in a managerial role.
Be a native speaker of English or in possession of a valid Academic IELTS certificate at Band 7.0 or above.
An ability to build effective working relationships with industry to drive and deliver dynamic, creative and innovative learning, fully catering to the needs of the customers.
Ability to develop positive working relationships with individuals and customers at all levels (internal and external)
