What is a Section Engineer – Asset Strategy?

An Asset Strategy Section Engineer leads and coordinates strategic planning, asset life cycle management, budgeting and capital prioritization of Gas and/or Electric assets to ensure system safety, reliability, compliance and cost effectiveness. A Section Engineer will help shape the future of our gas and electric infrastructure by leading the strategic planning and investment of critical utility assets, focused on Electric Asset Strategy or Gas Asset Strategy.

What does a Section Engineer – Asset Strategy do?

Strategic Planning & Asset Management

Develops and maintains asset strategies that support the company’s long-term capital and operational needs.

Coordinates and leads multi-year asset investment plans using risk, performance, and condition data to guide prioritization.

Facilitates the development and refinement of asset lifecycle models and maintenance strategies.

Analyzes system performance, asset health data, and external trends to identify risks and opportunities.

Analyzes and optimizes inspection and maintenance programs.

Supports the creation and management of budgets for capital and O&M programs.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

Supervises, directs, supports, and develops an engineering team.

Leads cross-functional working groups, planning workshops, and scenario analysis.

Collaborates with internal departments and external stakeholders to align strategy with execution.

Provides support for storm or gas emergency restoration efforts

System Planning & Regulatory Engagement

Oversees system planning and forecasting, including load growth, capacity needs, and infrastructure renewal.

Develops regulatory filings and supports participation in regulatory proceedings.

Engages with the Department of Public Service Staff and other stakeholders regarding system activities and long-term plans.

What does it take to be a Section Engineer – Asset Strategy?

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Electrical Engineering and 5+ years of related engineering/utility experience.

Ability to lead a team and effectively supervise, guide, direct and motivate members.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly

Dedication to continuous improvement

Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Excellent problem-solving skills, with innovation in mind

Strong analytical, organizational, and quantitative skills

Must be available to respond to gas and electric emergencies outside of normal business hours.

Valid driver’s license

Preferred:

Experience in utility asset management or system planning

Experience in direct supervision of employees

Current NYS Professional Engineers License

Industry recognized engineering skills certification
