Job SummaryColumbus State is hiring for a Controller. The Controller provides leadership and management to several departments, serves as the head of accounting, and maintains compliance and accountability for grants, student accounting, financial aid disbursement, the cashier, the college’s banking relationships, and other financial operations. The Controller initiates and implements policies, procedures, systems, and processes that enhance the college’s financial management and stability in partnership with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Deputy Chief Financial Officer (DCFO). This position works closely with the college’s cost center managers to ensure consistent application of policies, procedures and processes related to financial management.
Strategic & Organizational Leadership
Provides leadership and management, and maintains accountability for grants, accounting, financial aid disbursement, cashier and other financial operations. Manages, mentors, and develops a high-performing accounting team.
Directs supervisors and staff by articulating a vision and context for the work, assigning and delegating tasks, providing direction, and developing professional growth opportunities. Conducts annual employee evaluations, provides ongoing feedback, and effectively recommends pay increases, promotions, and other personnel actions. Participates in the employee selection process. Approves leaves and authorizes overtime, as appropriate. Administers disciplinary actions upon approval and in collaboration with Human Resources. Interprets, explains, carries out, and enforces the College’s policies.
Develops and implements strategic plans for effective and efficient accounting functions.
Reviews technology, processes, and develops and assists in the implementation of improvements to procedures or services.
Oversees the implementation and maintenance of financial systems and ERP solutions.
Financial Stewardship
Prepares and interprets the college’s internal and external financial statements ensuring accurate representation of the college’s financial position. Researches and implements new accounting principles and procedures. Creates, implements and maintains accounting systems, reporting systems, and procedures and controls that insure sound financial management.
Coordinates the college’s annual audit. Ensures proper policies, procedures and systems are in place for accountable programs in purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, grant accounting, financial aid disbursement, cash management, and development foundation accounting.
Oversees accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, grants, financial aid disbursement, cash management, development foundation, and community partnership accounting.
Ensures the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP/IFRS and all other applicable regulations.
Leads month-end and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations and journal entries. Develops and implements effective accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Supports the annual budgeting process. Monitors cash flow and treasury management activities. Makes recommendations for areas of improvement and conducts internal reviews of processes, procedures, practices, and operations.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.*
Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible budget/fiscal management experience.*
