Urban Arts Space (UAS) facilitates experimental galleries that adapt to the dynamic needs of the arts curriculum and communities served with a mission to challenge perceptions, deepen learning, and increase access to the arts. In alignment with this mission, the director provides leadership and strategic management, supporting and promoting the academic mission, arts curricula and research, cultural leadership, and artistic and intellectual enrichment of the College of Arts and Sciences (ASC) and university. The director oversees UAS’s ongoing development as an academic arts resource that is integrally connected to teaching, learning, and scholarship, and central to the University’s campus and community engagement efforts. The director is responsible for overseeing a wide range of events, performances, exhibitions, and public programs that showcase the creative and scholarly works of Ohio State’s arts faculty, staff, students, alumni, and invited artists and scholars. The director collaborates with units across the arts, and the university as appropriate, including academic units such as the Department of Art; Department of Design; Department of Dance; Department of African American and African Studies, Department of Art Administration, Education, and Policy; Department of History of Art; School of Music; Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts, as well as interdisciplinary arts centers, such as the Barnett Center for Integrated Arts and Enterprise and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design. The director works to integrate departmental, ASC, and university arts scholarship, teaching, and engagement activities and priorities into UAS’s programming while cultivating and facilitating UAS’s mission, vision, and values. The director supervises, both directly and indirectly, 25-30 employees including full-time senior staff and student interns. This position may occasionally require evening and weekend hours. Work locations will include the UAS gallery in downtown Columbus, Hopkins Hall Gallery, campus locations, and remote work (as approved).
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
Master's Level Degree and 7 years of relevant experience required, with a Major in history of art or fine art. An advanced degree in Studio Art (MFA), Art History (MA or PhD), Museum Studies (MA, PhD, MFA, MAEd), or the equivalent professional experience. Applicants must be comfortable curating across multiple mediums.
Additional Desired Education and Experience:
The position also requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, with significant experience in public relations and grant writing preferred.
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $75,700.00 - $98,900.00.
*The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
