Qualification Requirements

All temporary/relief Radiologic Technologists assigned to a correctional healthcare setting must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Professional Experience:

A minimum of twelve (12) continuous months of experience within the last three (3) years performing duties comparable in scope to those described herein, in a public or private healthcare institution. Internship experience does not qualify toward this requirement.

Licensure and Certification:

Must possess and maintain, in good standing, current certification from the State of California, Department of Health Services, as a Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT). Additionally, a valid Venipuncture Certificate and Fluoroscopy Permit are required where applicable.

Modality Coverage:

CRTs must maintain all applicable modality-specific licenses, including but not limited to Mammography, CT, MRI, etc., as required to operate within the State of California.

Note: Ultrasound Technologists are not required to hold a CRT license but must be certified through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

Respiratory Protection Compliance (8 CCR 5199):

Must comply with California Code of Regulations Title 8, Section 5199, including:

Current N95 and/or PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) medical clearance,

Annual respiratory protection training,

Completion of Appendix G questionnaire, and

Reevaluation in the event of marked immunocompromise, pregnancy, or other conditions that may impact respiratory protection use.

Language Proficiency:

Must be proficient in the English language, capable of effective verbal and written communication, and able to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions. Radiologic Technologists who do not meet these language proficiency standards shall not be authorized to perform services.

Service Delivery Requirements

Under the direction of the institution’s CEO, CME, or designated medical authority, the Temporary/Relief Radiologic Technologist shall perform duties including, but not limited to:

a. Develop and process diagnostic X-ray images.

b. Follow all imaging protocols established by the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

c. Collaborate with the Radiologist or ordering provider for clarification when necessary.

d. Provide emergency support in cases of contrast media reactions or other medical emergencies.

e. Ensure proper use of identification markers prior to imaging procedures.

f. Execute the appropriate imaging techniques per provider’s orders.

g. Assist with and perform special procedures, including fluoroscopy, drainages, biopsies, and myelograms.

h. Operate imaging equipment and manage digital images using RIS/PACS systems.

i. Prioritize patient safety and comfort during imaging procedures.

j. Accurately label and prepare digital images for radiologist review.

k. Adhere to statewide radiology protocols and documentation standards.

l. Evaluate images for positioning accuracy and clarity using the Fuji CR system.

m. Respond to emergency and bedside imaging requests.

n. Ensure adequate inventory of imaging supplies and materials.

o. Practice radiation safety and protection protocols per regulatory standards.

p. Coordinate maintenance and ensure safe operation of radiographic equipment.

q. Perform contrast and non-contrast radiographic exams, including those conducted in procedure rooms.

r. Maintain accurate records and ensure timely documentation in RIS/PACS in accordance with policy.

s. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervising personnel.

t. Foster a professional, respectful rapport with patients and healthcare staff.

u. Adhere to universal safety precautions.

v. Apply the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” (ALARA) principle to minimize radiation exposure.
