Assistant Director, ESL

Department:

Engineering Electroscience Laboratory

Under the direction of the ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL) Director, serves as the ESL Assistant Director to provide high-level oversight of the center's business operations and core administrative staff; directs and manages the formulation and implementation of ESL's administrative policies and procedures to streamline the center's operations and improve operational efficiency; consults with the Engineering Research Administration (ERA), the College of Engineering (CoE) and ESL Director to manage all administrative, operational, fiscal, and human resources functions within ESL; integrates the personnel, fiscal and operations functions of ESL to create a cost-effective model; serves as technical expert for administrative and fiscal functions; working with the ESL Director, establishes and maintains the ESL operating budget including inputs from the College of Engineering, gift funds, and ESL cost centers as well as monthly expenses involving personnel, facilities, supplies, equipment and strategic investments; collaborates with Principal Investigators (PIs), Sponsored Program Office (SPO) and Grants Coordinator and uses the established fiscal tools (WorkDay and/or PI Portal) to understand and document the fiscal health of the research at ESL; provides direction for ESL using ongoing metrics, trends, routine and ad hoc reports, analysis, and dashboards as a basis for strategic planning, assessing research and financial performance, and anticipating opportunities for growth; oversees ESL grant operations and coordinates administrative components of proposal submission; supports ongoing engagement with established industry partners, university stakeholders and state government; provides programmatic support to the execution of the ESL Consortium for Electromagnetics and RF Systems (CERF); works with faculty, staff and researchers to plan and execute ESL events, including annual consortium meetings, regular PI meetings and offsites, monthly student events; hosts and effectively presents overviews of ESL to visitors; works with marketing and communications specialists to develop and maintain ESL brochures and branded material; leads ESL in recruiting efforts for staff, researchers, and graduate students; works with faculty to recruit talented graduate students; organizes and hosts the annual recruitment events.

5 years of experience overseeing business and/or administrative operations; proven ability to effectively participate in the planning, organization and operation of a growing, diverse and technically complex research center; strong written and oral communication skills; proven success in overseeing the management of budgets, personnel, administrative operations, and programmatic initiatives in an engineering, industry, or manufacturing setting; ability to interact with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Desired: one or more years supervision experience; proven ability to write and assemble successful business plans as well as funding applications to government and private agencies and foundations.

The target hiring range for this job profile is $88,300- $115,350. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
