Summary Are you looking for a unique experience that provides a competitive wage in a booming industry? You may have found it with the Baltimore Water Taxi! We are looking for candidates to fulfill the role as a "Deckhand" onboard one of our Water Taxis.
What is a Deckhand?
A Deckhand is a junior officer and front-line representative whose primary responsibility is the safety of their assigned vessel, crew, and embarked/ing passengers. The Deckhand assists the Captain with docking/mooring vessels and performing the duties of a lookout identifying navigational hazards while the vessel is underway. The Deckhand has the secondary responsibility to process tickets and passes and ensure customers have a positive experience.
Do I need a boating license, certificate, or experience?
Nope. Our Deckhands have a wide range of experience, from being their first job ever to a seasoned boater looking for sea time and a Captain's License. We provide all the training needed to include Maryland Boater Safety, First Aid, and CPR/AED. Deckhands will also receive a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
Will I be eligible for benefits?
Yes. Part-Time employees will receive Sick Leave, and Full-Time employees will receive PTO. After your first year, employees will be eligible for Medical, Dental, and 401(k) benefits. After accruing 360 sea days, employees will be eligible for a free Captain Licensing Course.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include but are not limited to the following:
Assist passengers with loading, unloading, and handling of bikes/strollers/baggage, if necessary
Interact with passengers, answer questions, validate tickets, and provide relevant instruction
Fulfill ticket, pass, and experience sales
Maintain vessel cleanliness and high sanitary conditions by performing daily wash down and general cleaning
Perform engine checks and electronic logbook entries under the Captain's direction when required/directed
Serve as a vessel lookout to ensure safe operating conditions
Aid the Captain in mooring and unmooring
Secure vessel's hatches, entranceways, equipment, and personnel for safe underway operations
Assist the Captain in the maintenance of required log data
Perform emergency/contingency functions as directed by the Captain
Assist passengers with vessel lifesaving equipment
Steer vessel under the Captain's direction when required
Perform other duties as assigned by the Captain or by management
REQUIREMENTS The Deckhand must:
Be 18 years of age or older.
Possess/Pass the Maryland Boater Safety Course and First Aid/CPR certification (post-hire requirement)
Possess/Qualify for a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credentials) - post-hire (post-hire requirement)
Consent to random drug and alcohol screenings and security/background checks
Be willing to work flexible hours as required by the schedule or as directed by management
Possess excellent interpersonal skills, a neat and clean appearance, and a willingness to follow instructions
Be able to tread water for at least 5 minutes
Must have a normal color vision to interpret navigational lights and color-sensitive system and safety displays accurately
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to guests and coworkers
Be physically able, without assistance, to lift at least a 40-lb load off the ground, and to carry, push, or pull the same
