Job Description

FUNCTION

To ensure the safe and timely movement of material within the plant and to construct protective packaging solutions for defense-based products, ensuring the safe storage of raw materials, fixturing, and those items in the manufacturing queue while maintaining the highest standards for secure product packaging and shipment.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Parts are carefully handled and protected properly and safely throughout all phases of production and packaging

Work center schedules are frequently reviewed with production control and supervision followed by proactive activities to assist in meeting schedule

Wasted effort and material is sought and eliminated

Storage areas are well organized and maintained, and items are marked for efficient retrieval

Material handling equipment is well maintained and problems proactively reported

Custom packaging solutions are designed and built to meet specific defense product requirements

All defense products are properly secured in appropriate wooden crates or skids before shipment

Additional work is sought in other areas to ensure high levels of productivity

Duties are performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with safety specifications and defense industry standards

All materials are on the proper size skid for the appropriate part before being moved to a work center

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Material Handling

Identifies and moves material and fixturing for the next operation in the manufacturing schedule

Assists the machine operators with loading and unloading machines as required

Assists with loading and unloading trucks as required

May be required to empty chip bins, operate scrubber and other duties as assigned

Keeps material hold area in an organized manner including the fixture hold area

Packaging & Crate Construction

Constructs wooden skids, crates, and custom packaging solutions for defense-based products using hand and power tools

Measures and cuts lumber to specifications for protective packaging requirements

Assembles wooden crates using appropriate fasteners, ensuring structural integrity for safe transport

Applies protective padding, foam, or other cushioning materials as required for sensitive defense components

Labels and documents packaging in accordance with defense shipping requirements and regulations

Inspects completed packaging for quality and compliance with specifications

Maintains inventory of packaging materials including lumber, fasteners, and protective materials

Coordinates with quality control and shipping departments to ensure proper packaging procedures

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION

High school diploma or GED required

Valid automotive and forklift license

Must be a US citizen

Basic woodworking knowledge preferred

Familiarity with hand and power tools for construction projects

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE/SKILL

Two years forklift experience

Demonstrated ability to read travelers and technical drawings

Experience with basic carpentry and construction techniques preferred

Ability to work with measuring tools and follow dimensional specifications

Knowledge of packaging best practices for sensitive or fragile items

Understanding of defense industry shipping requirements is a plus

RELATIONSHIPS

Develops close working relationships with work center operators, department supervisors and manufacturing engineers, quality control and production control personnel

Coordinates closely with shipping and receiving departments on packaging requirements

Collaborates with quality assurance team to ensure packaging meets defense industry standards

Demonstrates a highly cooperative demeanor with other employees and willingly takes the initiative to help others succeed

Works effectively with cross-functional teams to solve packaging challenges and optimize material flow
