Position: Biomedical Equipment Technician, Supervisor
JOB SUMMARY:
Supervises the day-to-day operations of technical personnel in an assigned area. Additionally, the functions, qualifications, and detailed responsibilities described elsewhere for a Biomedical Equipment Technician, Senior Level, applies to this position.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Approximately 20-40% of time applied to the following supervisory activities:
Supervises, inspects and oversees, as required, technicians in the performance of job tasks
Implements technology management services at client sites. Coordinates delivery of services to clients, to include ancillary services such as: gas monitoring testing, receptable testing, and additional outside service needs
Compiles area inspection and job completion reports, and delivers these reports to the clients in his/her assigned area
Ensures that all subordinate paperwork is completed and submitted per established procedures
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
In addition to qualifications of a BMET Senior Level, candidates for the BMET Supervisor must have demonstrated the ability to supervise and instruct co-workers in the performance of job tasks over an extended period of time (ideally 2 years as a BMET Senior level).
The following performance expectations represent core competency requirements for the position of BMET Supervisor:
Maintains knowledge of the clinical purpose, proper operating procedures, maintenance requirements, and risks associated with use, of the medical devices for which the technician has maintenance responsibilities
Troubleshoots equipment problems to component level
Demonstrates proper and effective use of test equipment, input simulators, and hand tools
Interprets schematic diagrams and performs circuit analysis
Demonstrates effective equipment assembly/disassembly and component replacement skills
Interacts in a professional manner with all client staff, patients, and co-workers
Maintains knowledge of, and compliance with ISS Solutions Service Reporting System policies and procedures
Maintains knowledge of current medical equipment related regulatory standards and methods of compliance
Maintains knowledge of, and compliance with corporate, and client mandated policies regarding workplace safety issues (infection control, fire safety, hazard communications, etc.)
Demonstrates effective workload management
Demonstrates effective leadership skills
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Must be experienced in the troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining of medical devices having worked for at least five years in an in-house BMET program in a health care institution or with a clinical engineering program dealing with a variety of medical device and patient care facility issues. Prior experience supervising a group of technicians responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing most medical equipment commonly found in health care institutions is desirable.
Educational background should include the completion of a two-year Associates degree program in Biomedical Equipment Technology or military/non-military equivalent
Must have the ability to troubleshoot, repair, overhaul and modify most types of electric, electronic, electro-mechanical and pneumatic medical instruments and be able to effectively instruct others in these matters
Must demonstrate efficient record keeping abilities
Must possess crisis management skills
Familiarity with TJC standards in general and Environment of Care (EOC) elements related to medical equipment in particular
AAMI Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician should be attained within one year of accepting this position and kept current
Must be able to access and work in confined spaces with little or no assistance
Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. to chest height unassisted and 60 lbs. assisted
Must be able and willing to work with potentially harmful/irritating chemicals
Must have exceeded all of the requirements of a BMET, Senior Level
