Description
DUTIES:
1. All employees are expected to conduct themselves with the utmost professionalism, honor, and courtesy when working with firefighters, customers, other public safety organizations, and the public.
2. Is familiar with all expectations, policies, and standard operating procedures of Waller- Harris Emergency Services District 200.
3. Coordinate or perform related duties as required. For example, assist in establishing schedules and methods for providing apparatus and vehicle maintenance services, identify resource needs, and review needs with appropriate management. Perform maintenance and repair work on department vehicles, apparatus, and equipment
4. Operate heavy equipment as needed.
5. Perform custodial duties as necessary
6. Order supplies and equipment for work projects.
7. Effectively communicate with various vendors and contractors to assist the Lead Mechanic and Assistant Chief of Administration
8. Work effectively with contractors; seek bids and estimates for proposed projects.
9. Perform inspections and preventative maintenance of apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
10. Communicate with staff and station officers when applicable to ensure operational readiness.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Demonstrated ability to provide extraordinary customer service and satisfaction.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, including the ability to understand, receive and give directions, information, and ideas presented verbally and in writing; prepare reports; and use two-way radio systems, computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
• Perform a full range of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involved in a variety of vehicle, apparatus and equipment maintenance and repair. Safely drive and skillfully operate power equipment and hand tools involved in apparatus, vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. Maintain records, including time and material use records.
• Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
• Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and written, in English.
• Strong team building, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Able to work well without supervision.
• Able to handle suddenly changing work conditions and assignments.
• Requires a comprehensive background investigation, including a local, state, and federal criminal history, sex offender registry check, medical screening, and drug test
• Ability to drive heavy fire apparatus and equipment to and from various vendors for repairs and maintenance.
WORK LOCATION & CONDITIONS:
• The performance of essential functions will most often be performed in the office/field. It may regularly require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, and bright/dim lights.
• Some tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, including climbing ladders.
• Some combinations of stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, crawling, and lifting include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects and materials up to 50 Lbs. and occasionally heavier items 75 Lbs. or over.
• Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depth, textures, and visual cues or signals.
• Some tasks require the ability to use computers and office equipment.
• Potential for recall to duty depending on availability due to tropical or other weather events and other emergent situations depending on availability.

Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Thorough background in the methods, practices, principles, and terminology related to apparatus, vehicle, and equipment maintenance.
• Valid Texas driver' License and the ability to obtain a Class B (Firefighter Exempt) within 60 days.
• Driving records must comply with departmental driving guidelines.
• Certifications from the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission
o F1 – Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus
o F2 – Design and Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus
• Minimum 2 years’ experience maintaining fire apparatus
Preferred or Desired Qualifications:
Apparatus maintenance certifications from Pierce Manufacturing
Certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
Certifications from the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission
F3 – Fire Pumps and Accessories
F4 – Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems
F5 – Aerial Fire Apparatus
F6 – Allison Automatic Transmissions
FA4 – Advanced Electrical Systems
F7 – Fire Apparatus Foam Systems

E0- Inspection, maintenance, and testing of ambulances
