Building Automation Application Engineer

JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Application Engineer to join our dynamic CMS Controls-OH team in Cleveland -or- Columbus, OH. The Building Automation Application Engineer plays a foundational role in the design, development, installation oversight, and implementation of Building Automation Systems (BAS) for new construction and retrofit projects. This position works closely with senior engineers, project managers, and technicians, providing essential technical support, performing hands-on installation tasks, and contributing to the timely and successful completion of projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong eagerness to learn, a basic understanding of HVAC systems and controls, and excellent problem-solving skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Installation and Wiring:

Perform installations with prints and minimal oversight, ensuring adherence to design specifications.

Pull power and control wiring accurately and safely.

Install bridal rings and pull communication wire, maintaining proper cable management.

Terminate basic controllers such as VAV (Variable Air Volume), UV (Unit Ventilator), and FC (Fan Coil) units.

Terminate all types of controllers, including global controllers and network connections, ensuring proper functionality.

System Configuration and Checkout:

Download basic programs to controllers.

Perform point-to-point checkout, which includes verifying proper installation and program functionality.

Assist in troubleshooting and resolving entry-level technical issues related to ongoing projects, under supervision.

System Design and Documentation Support:

Assist in interpreting design drawings, specifications, and scope of work for building automation projects.

Support the creation of submittal packages, including control wiring diagrams, airflow diagrams, piping system diagrams, BAS equipment selection, and basic floor plan generation.

Help prepare valve and damper schedules, and assist with developing detailed sequences of operation.

Contribute to the preparation of material requisition lists.

Assist in drafting and submitting Requests for Information (RFIs) for unclear or conflicting project details.

Support the finalization of accurate as-built documentation based on field redlines.

Project Collaboration and Communication:

Collaborate effectively with project engineers, project managers, salespeople, programmers, and assigned project staff to ensure timely project completion.

Participate in internal project meetings and, as directed, attend job meetings with contractors and consulting engineers.

Communicate effectively with team members regarding problems, obstacles, and information needs.

Learning and Development:

Actively participate in training initiatives to enhance knowledge of building automation systems, industry standards, and company-specific tools and protocols.

Continuously develop technical expertise in HVAC controls, DDC programming fundamentals, and various BAS protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus).

Demonstrate a strong willingness to learn new technologies, software, and industry best practices.BASIC QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or GED.

Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and electrical schematics.

Proven ability to perform installations with prints and minimal oversight.

Experience running conduit and pulling wire (power, control, and communication).

Ability to install bridal rings and pull communication wire.

Experience terminating basic controllers (VAV, UV, FC).

Ability to terminate all controllers, including global controllers and network connections.

Basic understanding of how to download programs to controllers.

Experience performing point-to-point checkout (installation check and program verification).

Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Valid driver's license.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, HVAC, Building Automation, Construction Management, or a related technical field.

1+ years of experience in HVAC controls, DDC controls, or a related technical field that includes hands-on installation and wiring.

Basic N4 (Niagara Framework) Certification.

Distech Controls basic training.

Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., Microsoft Visio, AutoCAD) for creating diagrams.

Understanding of basic networking principles.

Exposure to industry-standard communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, or LON.

Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and understanding of electrical circuitry.

OSHA 10 certification.COMPENSATION
