We are seeking a Post Doctoral Scholar to join the Polar Geomicrobiology Group in the School of Earth Sciences and Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at The Ohio State University studying microbial ecology of glacier and permafrost environments. The Post Doctoral Scholar will embark on a program of independent research with the primary goal of determining how microorganisms maintain viability within glaciers and permafrost. Duties will include conducting laboratory work such as DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, making geochemical measurements; processing and analyzing molecular data using bioinformatics tools to reconstruct and study microbial genomes; leading manuscript preparation for submission to peer-reviewed journals; and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Other responsibilities include working collaboratively with project colleagues. This is an interdisciplinary project and an opportunity to work at the intersection of microbiology, geochemistry, and glaciology.
Qualifications:
PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field by the time of hire is required, along with a strong background in theoretical and practical experience within the fields of microbiology, geochemistry, and molecular microbiology and genomic analysis. Demonstrated experience measuring rates of microbial processes, and other microbiology laboratory equipment is required. Other required skills include DNA sequence data curation, processing, and analysis using high performance computing; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and a collaborative mentality towards research and mentoring.
Desired skills and techniques include operation of cell sorting flow cytometer, sterile procedures for working with environmental samples, and field sampling. These required and desired skills should be demonstrated through a record of peer-reviewed publications.
