- Performs emergency and non-emergency public safety communications - Accurately transmits and receives public safety emergency and informational calls; dispatches public safety units; and monitors field units to ascertain locations and safety of units Examples of Duties: - Operates a multi-channel, two-way radio system to receive and dispatch coded complaint calls and service runs to public safety field units - Verifies situations requiring immediate action - Advises responding field units of relevant information regarding public safety and broadcasts all supplemental data necessary to assist field units - Communicates changes in conditions and situations which impede departmental response calls - Provides specialized communications to service agencies and to task force units - Operates a command post radio network during civil emergencies and special detail events - Maintains a perpetual up-to-the-moment public safety unit status file Operates public safety radio systems, auxiliary radio systems, and other peripheral equipment such as a computer-aided dispatch - Maintains tow-in-logs and other records - Contacts owners/managers of businesses burglarized or vandalized during non-business hours Minimum Requirements: - High school diploma or the equivalent - Currently certified and currently employed as a Law Enforcement Telecommunicator/dispatcher through the Kentucky Law Enforcement Counsel (KLEC) - Must have completed the DOCJT Telecommunicator Academy or its equivalency - Must have 1 year of experience as a certified LINK/NCIC Law Enforcement Telecommunicator Other Minimums: - Must be a US Citizen - Must be a minimum of 18 years of age - Applicants who have bought or sold marijuana within one year of application, or have bought or sold any controlled substance or narcotic drug without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified - Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check - Must not have been convicted of a felony - Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis - Must work a varied schedule - Must submit to a pre-employment audiogram Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work Special Requirements: Must be certified as a Law Enforcement Telecommunicator and LINK/NCIC Basic operator (Full Access) in the state of Kentucky Must be certified as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and in Basic CPR from an American Heart Healthcare CPR Provider or obtain within 6 months of employment Supplemental Information: DETAILED JOB INFORMATION, IMPORTANT Job Overview Communications Specialist II (911 Dispatcher) This position is a public safety position and involves dispatching Police, Fire, and EMS resources to critical 911 calls from the public which includes calls such as cardiac arrests of persons including children and infants, working fires with victims trapped inside, shootings and auto accidents.

Due to the call volume, dispatchers can be involved with multiple incidents simultaneously.

This is a union position and all union employees pay fair share to the union whether or not they elect to be a member.

Shift selection, vacation bidding and overtime are all covered under the union contract.

As shift selection is based on seniority, new hires typically start on evening or overnight shifts.

It can take several years before a daytime shift becomes available.

The Communications Center is a 24/7 operation which mandates employees work on holidays if it should fall on their rotation.

Overtime is mandatory and can extend shifts up to a total of 16 hours with little or no notice.
