Senior Attorney

The Office of Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein is seeking qualified applicants for the position of full-time Senior Attorney in the Solicitor General Section of the Civil Division. This position will handle litigation in federal and state court as well. In addition, this position will be responsible to helping reviews of federal and state grants in order to determine the constitutionality of whether such grant terms can be imposed.

Requirements:

• Must currently be admitted to the Ohio bar and in good standing.

• Must have a minimum of 5 or more years of litigation, appellate advocacy, and legal research and writing experience as a licensed attorney.

• Must have experience litigating cases in federal and state courts.

Knowledge of:

• Legal principles of constitutional law, civil law, the Ohio Revised Code, Columbus City Codes, Federal & Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal & Ohio Rules of Evidence, and Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct.

• Legal, court, and judicial procedures, rules, terminology, methods, documents, practices, and objectives.

• Legal research tools and methods.

• Negotiation techniques and methods.

• English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition.

• Ability to think creatively and come up with solutions to issues.

• Ability to work effectively with persons from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

• Ideally, has experience reviewing grant agreements with federal, state, and local agencies.

Examples of Work:

• Represents the City of Columbus, its officials and its employees in challenges to federal or state law, administrative rules, or other directives.

• Represents city agencies and employees in legal proceedings and negotiations.

• Confers with City officials concerning the legal aspects of pending matters.

• Prepares cases for trial and appeal; manages all aspects of discovery including depositions.

• Prepares pleadings and briefs and drafts legal documents such as ordinances and settlement agreements.

• Conducts research and responds to legal inquiries.

• Responds to motions on assigned cases.

• Performs research for pending legal cases.

• Evaluates claims of or against the city for the purposes of recommending compromise settlements.

• May serve as lead attorney in lawsuits.

• Works with other municipalities and outside counsel to provide legal and litigation services for our clients.

The anticipated starting salary for this position will be between $88,691 and $115,000 depending upon experience.

About the Civil Division:

Located at 77 N. Front, the Civil Division represents the city and its employees in contract disputes, claims for personal injury or property damage, constitutional violations, wrongful death, tax disputes, and claims requesting money damages.
