Believer Meats is an innovative start-up revolutionizing the food industry through the development and commercialization of cultivated meat products. Leveraging cutting-edge biotechnology, we aim to provide sustainable, ethical, and high-quality meat alternatives to consumers worldwide. As we near completion of a new plant and prepare for commercialization, we are seeking an Upstream Operator- Controls to join our team.
JOB SUMMARY
The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless operation of automated bioreactor systems and other upstream processing equipment. This role will focus on basic troubleshooting, routine checks, and ensuring accurate data collection to maintain optimal performance of bioreactors and related equipment. You will work closely with engineering and operations teams to ensure systems run smoothly and safely.This is a great opportunity to get broad exposure to upstream processing operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
System Monitoring & Support
Monitor automated control systems (e.g., bioreactors, pumps, sensors) during production runs.
Track process data and flag abnormal trends or equipment alerts to senior team members.
Perform visual inspections and basic system checks as part of shift routines.
Instrumentation Handling
Assist in the setup, calibration, and cleaning of sensors and instruments used to measure parameters like pH, temperature, and oxygen.
Support scheduled calibrations and help log instrument data in accordance with procedures.
Replace or reset sensors and minor components under guidance.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
Respond to system alerts or malfunctions and perform basic troubleshooting (e.g., sensor resets, reconnecting cables).
Escalate complex issues to automation engineers or maintenance leads.
Perform preventive maintenance tasks per SOPs, such as cleaning sensors and checking for wear.
Documentation & Compliance
Record system checks, issues identified, and corrective actions in maintenance logs and electronic records.
Follow all safety, GMP, and data integrity guidelines.
Assist with documentation required for audits and inspections.
Continuous Improvement:
Identify opportunities for automation enhancements and process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in automation technologies and instrumentation and apply relevant innovations to the production process.
Participate in cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Team Collaboration
Work with operations, quality, and automation teams to ensure smooth shift handoffs and communication.
Participate in routine safety briefings and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or commensurate technical training in automation, electronics, biotechnology, mechatronics, or a related field
2+ years of experience in a manufacturing, lab, or industrial environment (internships, co-ops, or hands-on coursework acceptable).
Basic understanding of sensors, control systems, or industrial automation (e.g., PLCs, SCADA) is a plus.
Comfortable using basic tools for mechanical or electrical adjustments.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and compliance.
Willingness to learn and work collaboratively in a fast-paced production setting.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This role may require occasional off-shift work to address urgent automation issues or during major process upgrades.
The position may involve working in a controlled laboratory or factory environment with exposure to bioprocessing equipment.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
