Job Title: Software Engineer SME (Forensic Toolkit Lead Developer)

Primary Location: Northern Virginia, VA

Clearance: Top-Secret with SCI eligibility

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the development and maintenance of advanced forensic tools as part of the MXU platform. This role requires deep expertise in digital forensics, software architecture, and system development, with the ability to guide a team of developers in delivering robust solutions within a secure government environment. You will be responsible for the design, integration, deployment, and operational support of forensic tools handling large-scale digital evidence.

Responsibilities:

Serve as the subject matter expert for forensic tool development within the MXU code base.

Provide technical leadership and senior-level design guidance across development efforts.

Lead design, development, and analysis of complex operational and application systems.

Drive the agile delivery of forensic tool builds, incorporating bug fixes, security enhancements, and new features aligned with approved government requirements.

Maintain and enhance the MXU system, ensuring continuous alignment with security, performance, and functionality standards.

Develop seamless integration mechanisms for sharing results with other MXU applications using common databases, schemas, and object storage.

Build intuitive user interfaces to visualize and exploit relationships across diverse datasets.

Establish and maintain a robust Application Programming Interface (API) to support backward compatibility and enable modular expansion.

Ensure software performance and reliability across all components including analytics and database modules.

Integrate emerging data types, analytics tools, and methodologies for the analysis of seized media.

Oversee the deployment and operational maintenance of forensic tools across development and mission environments.

Ensure compliance with all relevant security policies, protocols, and legal standards for digital evidence handling.

Required Qualifications:

Active Top-Secret security clearance with eligibility for SCI access

Proven expertise in software development with specialization in digital forensics and forensic tool development.

Extensive experience in forensic analysis, file systems, data recovery, and evidence handling best practices.

Demonstrated leadership in the architecture and design of forensic software systems.

Experience processing large-scale digital evidence (including petabyte-scale datasets) from diverse sources.

Proficiency in .NET programming languages and thin client front-end development technologies.

Familiarity with forensic standards, legal protocols, and regulatory requirements governing digital evidence.

Experience delivering forensic solutions on commercial cloud environments with distributed processing capabilities.

Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams across development, cybersecurity, and infrastructure domains.

Strong strategic planning skills with a focus on aligning toolkit development to mission objectives.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; capable of translating complex concepts for non-technical audiences.

Relevant certifications (e.g., GCFA, GREM, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect) are highly preferred.

U.S. Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Hands-on experience in integrating forensic solutions with modern analytical tools and big data platforms.

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices in a secure environment.

Experience working with federal or intelligence community stakeholders.

Demonstrated success in transitioning prototypes into production-grade systems within classified settings.
